hey there guys thanks to all ur feedback i have decide btw these two knives as the knife for me. however what do u pple think abt these. i kinda wanna get the Benchmade 705 McHenry & Williams against the Microtech UDT. but still i need advice...
how do these two knives compare in terms of :/-
its use,
its durablity,
its locking mechanism
and its usuage when my hands are wet

thanks pple
regards.

I haven't owned a Microtech, so I can't say about it but I have owned a few Benchmade knives, and have always found them to be totally reliable and extremely well made.

Hope this helps.

I would choose the Benchmade 705. The texture on the G-10 handles are durable and do not scratch or scuff up as bad as anodised aluminium and the Axis locks is one of the tougher locking mechanisms on the market.

Love the BM705, but was a little surprised at the size. Just a wee bit small for my hands. (Or maybe I'm too used to my Endura. :) ) Am now going to get the BM710. Haven't had the UDT in my hands yet, but I kind of prefer the Axis lock to most of the other types of locks now that I've had the chance to try one. Very smooth movement with firm, solid lock-up.

I'm sure there will be some forumites coming along shortly to expound the virtues of the UDT. In the end, it may come down to your own personal preference. In many ways, they are both very good knives and you would do well with either.

BTW, welcome to the forums. Always good to see another forumite from Singapore.

Since you are looking for a working knife, with an emphasis on durability, I would suggest that the simpler design is the better. Go with the Benchmade. I know Microtech is tough, too, but an automatic is inherently less reliable in the long term.

Also, you never know who may be interested, and the 705 is a relatively unobtrusive little knife; an automatic does raise hackles in some places.

I've owned both,
The UDT is great, perfect fit/finish.
The fit/finish of the 705 I have is slightly behind the UDT, but there wasnt anything about it that was bad.

Durability wise, neither of them would break on you.
The UDT does have a spring though, and those do break, though not often.
Same with the Axis omega springs.
The tip on the UDT is thicker though, so it would also be stronger.

Locks...Both have absolutely secure locks.
A botton lock is one of the safest, if not the safest.
Same for the Axis.
There is an advantage in closing the knife. With the 705 you dont have to close it against the tension of a spring.

The UDT may be a tiny bit better for wet conditions, especially if you get one with a coated blade.
The T6 handles can't rust like the liners in the 705.
The handle also curves slightly at the bottom, giving you suposedly a better grip.
That brings me to the handles.
A drawback of the UDT is usable handle size. I have medium hands and I can't get all four fingers on a UDT handle. On my 705 the handle fits better.
I think it's because the UDT handle wastes about half an inch by adding that guard looking thing.
I'd try to handle one first, they're very different knives.

I own both a Benchmade 710 and an L-UDT
Both are incredible knifes. The 710 was larger and heavier than I expected ( purchase mail order only)
The L-UDT is a perfect size. Both came perfect out of the box with the sharpest blades I've ever handled. The 710 is the M2 steel version and with it's serrations the only place I really feel safe carrying it is on duty.
The L-UDT I have a stonewahed blade and it is about the prettiest blade I have ever seen (also serrated). Each fits my hand well as I have small hands.
Benchmade is a higher volume manufaturer and as such there is a slightly higher chance of getting a lemon, though I have had 3 benchamde knifes and each was great.
I have 2 michrotechs and the fit, finish is great on them as is the blade.

Michrotech being a smaller maker also seems in brief experience to have a tendancy to retire a design faster than benchmade making it harder to get that model later.
I would get the michrotech NOW and get the benchmade a little later as it will probably be easier to find when you are ready.
Either choice will give you years of service if cared for properly.

hey.. UDT ?! automatic?? are u sure u can bring in auto knive to singapore.. ?? microtech has got better technology on metallurgy cos the blade is treat using sub zero quench that is the cygo. which is very deep to explain. it improve the egded holding. let me explained in a very easy way. after the cygo, the molecluar elecment are more stable so more unwilling to give up their position. mean very molecular stay in place and is very hard to be remove from their position. when we cut someting.. some molecluar are being wear away. its so small that we dont notice it. this is y your blade will not be as sharp even u cut material like paper.

Just flip a coin..., or better yet....get 'em both!
