Stuck motor :-(

Any suggestions for this one?

I have a motor that came from a large squirrel blower. I'd like to use it to power a grinder. For some reason, the blower itself won't come off of the motor. It slides easily to the edge of the shaft, then...locks up. I've tried WD-40. I'd rather not attempt "percussive maintenance" (READ: hammer.)

Thoughts?

Not familiar with the kit (Squirrel Blower has conitations that I'm not going to touch with a barge pole!) but is the blower so big as to preclude the use of a gear puller?

Failing that, a couple of wooden wedges between the blower and the motor may ease the blower off the shaft.

Is it possible that there might be a spring ring hidden by dirt and corruption holding the blower in place. Or a Whitworth key may be hidden in the blower. Look for a small slot in the blower and line the shaft up with the slot. Use inertia blows from a plastic or rubber hammer to expose the key and grab it with some pliers.

Some devices are peened in place. Measure the diameter of the shaft at the motor and the end of the shaft. If it flares at the blower end some gentle filing may be in order.

I'm sure that you've had all these thoughts already but maybe........?

'Preciate the reply, Dav.

I did try the gear puller. But the fan is oddly shaped and sort of precludes the puller.

Still, I ain't licked, yet! Thanks!

I have to go with Dav probaly the shaft is oversize on the end on purpose or abuse. Check for set srcew. If al else fails waste the fan blade, it will just lie around for years and you will throw it away the day before you realize how to use it for something useful.

Hey Mike....

I've run into this before and it most always is the case the shaft is slightly larger from whatever at the end...

File or sand the edge,,it sounds to me it has a lip for some reason...

If that doesn't work, use the Blue Tip key to get it off..

didnt read all the posts...but i would put two stout boards on both sides of the drive under the blower, put something under the motor to catch it when it comes loose, and tap the motor out with a brass bar of some type...duck soup.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. There was a slight burr on the end of the shaft that needed to be filed off (Thanks Normark!)

Onto the next step!
