What is the difference between a thumb-stud and a thumb-disk?
The blade Hole, is my favorite opener. Thanks!

The difference is that while a thumb stud is a little cylinder that pokes out of one or both of the sides of the blade, a thumb disk is much flatter and wider, and is generally screwed on top of the blade. E.g. the Emerson pictured here has a thumb disk.

If you like the blade hole, then you would probably like the disk, instead of a stud. I find the disks on my Emersons feel the same / catch the thumb in the same way as a blade hole does. I find that it is easier to catch the disk with my thumb vs a stud.

I prefer the disc to any other form of opener. It is more comfortable and gives me a place to put my index finger when using the knife. Seems to provide a bit more leverage. Not near as likely to catch on jeans as double thumb studs when drawing knife. This could be very important in an emergency or a combat situation.

The thumb disks tend to be on knives that aren't very "flickable" with the thumb. Emersons for example can't be flicked open like many Benchmades (studs)are designed to be. The disk allows a similar opening to the Spyder hole in that the thumb guides the blade all the way to the opened position. Don't get me wrong, Spydercos can be flicked open, just not like Benchmades. I personally like Spyder holes. Also, not all thumb studs are on thumb flickable knives.

The disk on the side of the very nicely designed Camillus Cuda is very easy to open. The disk rotates as you open the blade.

Thanks LYCOSA. I always thought more knife companies should use the DISC.
My second choice would be the Spyder hole. Nothing to hang up on.
