I feel a bit silly asking, but does anyone really know if there is a functional purpose to the little steel ball bearing in the stud lock or is it just decorative. Does the spring make contact with it?

ya know that is an interesting question now that you mention it. calling resident Kershaw engineer Timmy G.

The ball bearing expands the plastic spring holder when it is pressed in, therefore holding the springholder in the blade.

thank you... I love figuring out mechanisms and I just couldn't quite figure that one out. I was thinking perhaps the round spring somehow worked better pushing against the steel ball. That totally makes sense.
