Hey, I was wondering if any of you guys had experience with a stud lock, liek the one on the Kershaw Offset. I think that's a beautiful knife espescially with teh splattered paint grip, but the lock is really important,
Does anyoe know how it compares to a BM AXIS, or a strong framelock?
thanks

I recently purchased a Mini Mojo to find out how I liked the lock. I would suggest you try the same as it's the cheapest stud lock available. If you like it, go for the more expensive ones, if not, sell it.

That said. I think it locks up as good (if not better) than a same sized liner lock (Scallion). It also feels as solid as a similar sized frame lock (chive, leek).

The Axis lock is my personal favorite. I wouldn't feel as confident with a large knife with a stud lock compared to a similar knife with an axis lock. That doesn't mean it wouldn't perform better, just my opinion.

For the size of the Mini Mojo I am confident that it would hold up to the level of work that I put knives of that size through (not nearly as much as a larger knife and that's why I usually carry two knives).

yea that was what i was thinking, the offset jus tlooks amazing, its hard to pass up, but I didn't think the lock would be as strong on such a larg blade
I'll get it when i have more $$

right now I'm looking into a BM Rukus of 806 (if i can find one)

I have all four of Kershaw's studlock offerings, (Mini Mojo/Mojito, Spec Bump, Speed Bump, and Offset) and find the studlock to be very strong, extremely reliable, and easy to use one handed (either hand). I EDC's the Mini Mojo and Spec Bump for the last year and never had any issues with a failure of the lock. It released only when I intended it to.

This is a quote from a thread about the Spec Bump's studlock.
I have tested the Studlock against all of our other locks and it is near the top of the list.We have built a custom lock breaking machine to test locks and every one of our knives goes through this test. The Spec Bump will out perform any liner lock on the market.

Incidentalist's suggestion to try out the Mini Mojo/Mojito (name recently changed to Mojito) is a good one. If you search around, you may also be able to find the aluminum handled Speed Bump (1595ALBK) for a similar price. This'll be a bit closer in size to the Offset, and a great knife too.

The Offset is an amazing knife, the handles are very comfortable, although the new G10 handles are probably a bit more practical (grippier) than the Aluminum ones. The way it opens is amazing, not blazingly fast, but a lot of power. Definite kick to it.

Heres an old thread I posted with some pictures of the two different aluminum Offsets.

Another big  for the Studlock. I particularily like the transparency of the lock. You know immediately should something be wrong with it, because the mechanism isn't hidden inside the handle. I am sure some people will argue that it is an inappropriate lock for SD because the stud is accessible to your opponent, but otherwise I think it is an excellent mechanism.

hmm, what is opening and closign like, the motion of it and all? can you do it all one handed easily

As I stated above, I only have the Mini Mojo/Mojito, so my answers are in regards to that particular knife.

Opening is almost exactly like using any other Kershaw flipper speed safe knife. There is an integrated safety on the flipper that required me to slightly alter my finger location when I use it. It was awkward for the first 10 flicks or so, but now it's second nature and it's like it's not even there.

Closing is easy one handed. I just scoot my hand up the handle a little bit so that I can reach one stud with my thumb and the other with my 'pointer' finger and just disengage the lock. Then it's like closing any other speedsafe knife with one hand.

I do know that the larger stud locks also open with the flipper and isn't any different than using a similarly sized speed safe knife. I haven't attempted to close one of those with only one hand. I think it would be more difficult than the smaller Mojo/Mojito, but with the dexterity I've seen on these boards I'd say anything is possible.
