Stud or snap?

Hi,

I like the look of a stud as opposed to a snap on a retaining strap of a sheath. Would the stud and the hole in the strap hold up as well as a regular snap?

Thanks,
Jason

In my opinion (with limited experience mind you) a snap is much more secure. However, done properly (hole in strap not oversized, stud head to neck ratio substantial enough to capture the strap and properly tensioned) it should be pretty dang secure, enough that you wouldn't have any worries about the blade becoming easily dislodged. On the flip side of why a stud is better, the chances of rubbing against something and having the strap on a stud release are less I feel than that same scenario with a snap.

All other things being equal I believe a snap is going to have a longer service life. I can only imagine the stud (aka frog) and eye will become loose over time and the retention will become less and less secure. Since the latter retention relies on the eye in the leather remaining smaller than the largest diameter of the frog and the leather being well maintained, any stretching, cracking, or other damage to the eye will reduce its holding strength until eventually it will slip off the frog with minimal resistance.

I'm a big fan of the frog.

I once had me a snap that had been deformed a bit, which made it useless.

That said. I only use halftanned leather which doesn´t wear out as fast as vegetable tanned leather would, and snaps around the frog like a snap would..

I am a big fan of snaps too.
Sometimes a frog doesn´t work when the guard is too small..
