I had my hopes up that the Studebaker leaf spring was 9260 but as far as I can tell its 5160. I've used some bought 9260 in the past and it produces a bold temperline. As you can see there isn't any. I'm still real happy with the knife. Forged on Sunday and finished on Wednesday if today is Wednesday. 5 1/2" blade, 10 1/2" overall. More sambar stag and wrought iron.

Nice Ray.

I get a pretty striking temper line with 5160, I've never used 9260 so I cannot compare. Still looks great as usual.

Looks good from here! I'm not usually a fan of stag, but that piece has a really nice shape to it. Looks comfy.

Chuck, What are you using for a quench? I put clay on this blade thinking it was 9260 and there's no sign what so ever. If I edge quench 5160 I get a slight temperline but not much. Thats in Texaco Type A.

Ray I use peanut oil heated to 150F. I used to use crankcase oil until the wife started complaining about the garage smelling so bad. I got OK results with the CC oil but the peanut oil is much better. I will snap a pic of one on sunday and post it.

Here's a couple of blades with the hamon both in 5160. The larger blade was double qeunched, first edge quenched, then clay backed and quenched. The smaller was edge heated and quenched. Both were done in peanut oil heated to about 150f.

Thought you might enjoy the new wood i picked up. I found this at Gilmer, Nicest pink ivory I have ever seen.

Chuck

Chuck, Thats pretty impresive for 5160. You must have bought the pink ivory on line. I hope you got the piece you picked. Does look like there's alot of curl to it. Thats one wood that was real poplular 10 or more years ago. How big of a piece did you get?

Yes I got the pink ivory on line. the piece is 5x32 inches and 1 3/16 thick. I did get the piece I selected, Gilmer woods in Portland is very good at delivering what you see. They even had it marked sold within a couple of hours. I saw it was popular a few years ago, but none of it had any figure. It was just pink. This is the first stuff i have seen with nice figure in it. The only problem is it still is has 18% moisture in it. They covered it in shellac so it will dry nice and slow. Ray are you going to BAKCA? I just decided 2 weeks ago to go. Not really impressed with the advertizing, we'll see how it goes this year, need to be better than last to keep going back.

Chuck

Chuck, I get out to Gilmer a couple times a year. Nice thing about it is there less than a mile away Pacific Machine and Tool Steel so I kill two birds with one stone. You ought to see what they have in person. Its not one of those places you want to go visit with a pocket full of money.

I really thought BAKCA went down hill last year. Saturday was slow and Sunday wasn't worth being there. I'm going to pass on it this year. I will be at Blade West.

Yeh I was not going to go until I talked with margaret taylor and alex felix. since they are going I decided to go to BAKCA rather than the Napa show. It would cost me the same even of I did not sell anything at Bakca and sold 1k worth at Napa. Just trying it one more time.

Think I may try to get to gilmer when I come up for BW. We are coming up to spend time with the inlaws and take a bit of a vacation.
