This is Gage's second summer as my student. Last summer he spent 3 days a week learning the basics of forging and made one small knife.
This summer he could only work in my forge 2 days a week due to football practice. He has greatly improved his hammer technique and his patience. He completed 3 knives and forged 2 more.

Not to shabby for a 6'-5", 265#, 13 year old.
Thanks for looking,
Mike

Good looking knives there! I really like the blade shape of that smiths knife. Sounds like he's one beast of a young man! My nephew is built like that, not quite that big, but by the 6th grade he was 6' tall 190#. Now he's pushing 220 as a sophomore. I just make sure I can still whoop his but!

Good work as a teacher, it can be extremely satisfying watching the light bulb come on over a students head sometimes! Wish I had someone to teach me about knife making.

Awesome work!

I wish I had starting making knives at that age!

Wow, at least judging by looks he's really coming along nicely. I'm drooling over the knife in the middle. It really looks good to me and I'll bet the other two are just as nice once you get them in hand.

Thanks for the input everyone. His knives not only look good, they cut good. The top one has been sold to an avid hunter. Don't think I have ever seen anyone as excited over a sale. He gave the blacksmith knife to his dad and the small knife went to his mom.
He has been saving his Christmas and birthday money for 2 yrs along with what he earns doing odd jobs. He bought a Hofi style 3# hammer at the Big Blue Hammer hammer-in in March. Not many kids would spend that kind of money for a hammer.
Thanks again for all the input,
Mike

turk.919, all you have to do is show up at my forge. I don't charge for my time. I am happy to pass on what I can to anyone willing to learn.
Gage is the only person that I have taught from a zero starting point. His dad pays for supplies used. Others have been at various points on the knife making learning curve. Some have picked up what they need in one day and others longer.
The shop door is always open.
Mike
