Happy New Year 2014 to all!

MTech MT-A822RB (= Rainbow titanium oxide)
MTech MT-A822GY (= Gray chrome)

MTech MT-A822RB
MTech MT-A822GY

I first noticed a thumbnail pic of the rainbow in a side listing from an eBay search
(the typical "you may also be interested in..."
well in this case I certainly was!!!)

They are substantially bigger than I first thought -
even after reading the specs - 3 3/8" blade, 4 3/4" closed.

They are significantly bigger compared to a standard 91mm SAK (Victorinox Spartan)

The GY looks "bigger" because of the perspective angle - they are the same size.

They have skeletonized sculpted handles and upper part of the blades with flame design.

MTech says the blades are 440 stainless steel (probably 440A) and handles are stainless steel -
whereas I've seen quite a few ad listings that claim handles are aluminum.

The weight might give a hint -
RB = 5.80oz; GY = 5.81oz (can it be chrome plating weighs more?)
compared to 91mm SAK - Victorinox Spartan = 2.08oz.

A magnet sticks strongly to the handles - so they are steel.

These are inexpensive knives @ mostly under $13 delivered price.

The GY came with a few problems -
the blade gray chrome finish was marred -

the vendor gave me a partial refund so the knife didn't cost me that much -
I then set to with some Brasso metal polish and worked at the blade finish -
(at the risk of polishing/rubbing off the gray chrome finish)
and after some effort managed to polish out the marring.

All the pics except for the one showing the marring and the SAK comparison, were after the polishing.

It also arrived not that sharp, it would cut paper - but not cleanly, and at certain parts of the blade it felt dull -
usb microscope pics show why...

Original edge of GY -

chips on edge

other side -

shows flashing or residue metal on edge surface - did not swipe off.

Of course first thing I did was to take it to the Work Sharp Knife & Tool Sharpener - Ken Onion Edition (link to review)
and put a 20deg/side convex edge on the knife -
usb microscope pics (~110x magnification)

the resultant polished and sharpened blade -

(polished and sharpened blade shown in all the photos, except for the two already cited -
and shows I needlessly worried about polishing/rubbing off the gray chrome finish)

The RB blade is better, not that much -

so I have to look forward to sharpening it too...

Mechanically both are fine (I'll only show pics of the RB version) -

blades are well centered in the handle closed -

well aligned open -

They are are Spring Assisted openers - hence the name "Ballistic", and the flipper protrusion -
they both open positively and both liners lock open securely and well -

I have very few titanium oxide rainbow finish knives -
the most well known to me is the Kershaw Rainbow Leek (link to pictorial review)

The GY obviously reminded me of my very cherished and one time EDC - Kershaw Ken Onion Black "boron" Leek

This MTech GY is more grayish, whereas the Kershaw has almost a dark brown/bronze coloring.

I really like the looks of both versions -
although they are not what one would call "elegant" -
to me, they are certainly attention grabbing, attractive and appealing -
perhaps a bit big and garish - but not in a nasty or cheap way -
"I like them" and let's just leave it at that -
since there is no accounting for every taste :o

I think that stunning is the perfect word to define them. I truly preffer the rainbow Leek shown but... each to his own!

Thanks for your response...

ha-ha! I have both so I don't have to choose -
the Rainbow Leek (review link) is a much more practical using knife -
although I chose the black polished Tungsten DLC ("boron") Leek 1660BLK (review link) as my EDC for quite a while.

These MTech are much more for just looking at.

But still being a knife I could not live with them dull/blunt -
and the rainbow MT-A822RB needed sharpening -
so.....

taped for protection -

I used masking tape because it does not leave a residue,
and it was thick enough to prevent damage from momentary contact with sanding belt(s)

Resultant blade after use of the Work Sharp Knife & Tool Sharpener - Ken Onion Edition (link to review)

the bevel is wide because it needed setting/grinding of a new more acute bevel (convex bevel at 20deg/side)

usb microscope pics (~110x)

Now...

I'm happier as these knives can be used -
and they are very sharp - 440A is quite a respectable steel -
biased more for toughness over hardness -
but it's a good general purpose steel for pocket knives that may be used hard -
AUS-8 is in a similar ballpark.

Just beware that those flame shaped ornaments on the spine of the blade may make it jam in whichever material you are cutting, besides they are going to fill with gunk and whatnot. I wouldn't use it for spliting apples!

Thanks for the advice....

;) :p
It wasn't an apple  :D -
and it did just fine....
although I still much prefer using my kitchen knives.

I love finding inexpensive knives that tickle my fancy. Dress them and polish like yours and end up with a fun knife that ultimately if lost is no big deal

Thanks for your comment - I totally agree with your take.

Most of the time I admit to being "seduced" by knives by their looks -
of course I check their specs to see if they are even serviceable -
if they are, and the price is cheap -
I am all over them -
since if I am fooled -
I am not so badly out of pocket.

These knives are "stunning" in my/beholder's eyes -
and as soon as I saw this eBay listing photo -

I wanted it....
then to find out it was only $13.....
- 440 steel and assisted opening?

How could I resist?

It did turn out to be larger than I expected just reading the specs -

compared to two of my recent reviewed knives - both are low priced -
between
Ken Warner BGG - Folding Hunting Knife (handle is huge)
and
Harnds CK6015 Viper (longer but slimmer)

Then by doing a little research I found this model came in different finishes -
and the one that really attracted me was the gray chrome finish -
as mentioned reminiscent of my cherished and one time EDC the Kershaw Ken Onion Black "boron" Leek

size comparison with the Kershaw JunkYard Dog 2

As it is despite the low prices these are obviously very presentable and actually usable knives -
I like 440 steel even the lowly 440A - remember the original Kershaw Ken Onion Leek was 440A before moving to Sandvik 12C27
then to 14C28N

Judging by the photo it looks like the Worksharp puts somewhat of a convex edge on it.
Yes, yes!
You are absolutely right.

The WorkSharp are belt grinder sharpeners so they naturally put a convex edge/bevel on blades.

Please see my two reviews -

Work Sharp (belt grinder) Knife Sharpener (link)

Work Sharp Knife & Tool Sharpener - Ken Onion Edition (link)

Thanks,

UnknownVT, thanks for your review, after coming across it I got one of the MTech MT-A822GY versions yesterday. Mine doesn't have the issues that yours had (although I can't say that I have examined the edge under magnification). Purchased it off eBay, this model doesn't seem to be widely available yet.

Besides the versions you picture, the following are also available:
MT-A822BL - Blue
MT-A822CH - Chrome
MT-A822GD - Gold
MT-A822RD - Black with Red Flames

I had a difficult time deciding between the GY and RD, but decided I like the look of the GY better. It may not be the most useful knife in the world, but it sure is nice to look at and I am amazed that MTech can produce something like this for the price that they do. I'd say this knife is definitely one of their best. Thanks again for reviewing it! We all can't collect Hinderers...

Thanks for sharing and for giving the other model #'s -
I'm glad you like the MT-A822GY Gray Chrome model -
that was also my choice after my eyes recovered from the stun/bling of the RB (rainbow model) ;)

I liked the clip too, especially for the contrast between the rainbow finish and the gray chrome.

It is a deep pocket carry -

On the RB version the clip seems to work fine,
on the GY version the attaching screw heads slightly impede -
so I normally have to push more to seat the knife all the way down.

I also had an early issue with the clip and screws on the GY model -
the clip spring tension was very strong/tight and it was difficult to use.

So I tried to loosen it - by the lazy way first - just lifting the clip -
the spring tension was gradually loosening -
but on one of the later lifts I thought I heard a light cracking sound -
but couldn't see anything amiss even on close examination.

Then on an even later adjustment lift - I found out the reason for the sound - one of the screws fell out.

I thought perhaps I had inadvertently stripped the screw - but fortunately that was not the case -
it was just that the screw purchase was very shallow due to a lift in the clip screw hole -
I used a pair of pliers and straightened the that section and was able to screw it down with more threads engaging.

But overall the clip on my GY model is not quite as good as my RB.

Good review, I have been trying to win one of these in auction but the price always gets pushed up to the "buy it now price" or even higher lol. Maybe I'll just have to stop trying to save a few bucks and buy one at full price.

That well known auction site is not always the cheapest for US brands.

Search for A822 or MTA822 on places like KnifeCountryUSA and HRKnives - you'd be surprised at their prices -
esp the first, where they have an additional 10% discount and free shipping.
