Happy New Year 2014 to all!

MTech MT-A822RB (= Rainbow titanium oxide)
MTech MT-A822GY (= Gray chrome)

MTech MT-A822RB
MTech MT-A822GY
I first noticed a thumbnail pic of the rainbow in a side listing from an eBay search
(the typical "you may also be interested in..."
well in this case I certainly was!!!)
They are substantially bigger than I first thought -
even after reading the specs - 3 3/8" blade, 4 3/4" closed.

They are significantly bigger compared to a standard 91mm SAK (Victorinox Spartan)

The GY looks "bigger" because of the perspective angle - they are the same size.
They have skeletonized sculpted handles and upper part of the blades with flame design.
MTech says the blades are 440 stainless steel (probably 440A) and handles are stainless steel -
whereas I've seen quite a few ad listings that claim handles are aluminum.
The weight might give a hint -
RB = 5.80oz; GY = 5.81oz (can it be chrome plating weighs more?)
compared to 91mm SAK - Victorinox Spartan = 2.08oz.
A magnet sticks strongly to the handles - so they are steel.
These are inexpensive knives @ mostly under $13 delivered price.
The GY came with a few problems -
the blade gray chrome finish was marred -

the vendor gave me a partial refund so the knife didn't cost me that much -
I then set to with some Brasso metal polish and worked at the blade finish -
(at the risk of polishing/rubbing off the gray chrome finish)
and after some effort managed to polish out the marring.
All the pics except for the one showing the marring and the SAK comparison, were after the polishing.
It also arrived not that sharp, it would cut paper - but not cleanly, and at certain parts of the blade it felt dull -
usb microscope pics show why...
Original edge of GY -

chips on edge
other side -

shows flashing or residue metal on edge surface - did not swipe off.
Of course first thing I did was to take it to the Work Sharp Knife & Tool Sharpener - Ken Onion Edition (link to review)
and put a 20deg/side convex edge on the knife -
usb microscope pics (~110x magnification)

the resultant polished and sharpened blade -

(polished and sharpened blade shown in all the photos, except for the two already cited -
and shows I needlessly worried about polishing/rubbing off the gray chrome finish)
The RB blade is better, not that much -

so I have to look forward to sharpening it too...
Mechanically both are fine (I'll only show pics of the RB version) -
blades are well centered in the handle closed -

well aligned open -

They are are Spring Assisted openers - hence the name "Ballistic", and the flipper protrusion -
they both open positively and both liners lock open securely and well -

I have very few titanium oxide rainbow finish knives -
the most well known to me is the Kershaw Rainbow Leek (link to pictorial review)

The GY obviously reminded me of my very cherished and one time EDC - Kershaw Ken Onion Black "boron" Leek

This MTech GY is more grayish, whereas the Kershaw has almost a dark brown/bronze coloring.

I really like the looks of both versions -
although they are not what one would call "elegant" -
to me, they are certainly attention grabbing, attractive and appealing -
perhaps a bit big and garish - but not in a nasty or cheap way -
"I like them" and let's just leave it at that -
since there is no accounting for every taste
