Stupid box rant...

Does anyone like the boxes that Buck is using on some of their knives these days? The boxes I'm currently maligning are those black things with the magnetic catches. I know it's terribly irrational, but those things just annoy the heck out of me. If they're in a slipcase they're hard to get out, they're big, it's hard to figure out where the flap is sometimes, they're big, there's just enough of that corrugated paper confetti to get everywhere, but not enough to actually cushion anything. That stuff is the packaging world's version of parsley. They're hard to store because they're so big, they've got to be expensive, and they're big.

They're big.

I keep boxes, the yellow folding cartons they've used for years are great. Open them. fold them flat, and band a bunch of them together. Easy storage.

I fully realize it's a stupid thing to inflict on others, but I despise these boxes.

So there.

If we're gonna complain about boxes....

I like the guy that sells you a knife with the yellow box, folded flat and put in a mailing envelope along with the knife in a bag.
It arrives with the box all smashed up...... But hey, they saved a buck on shipping!

Or maybe the guy that thinks the box he pictures with the knife is a shipping box....😣

One of them is a regular here.😉

I dont like packaging, its just trash we somehow put emotional attachments too......these black boxes and the old wooden boxes I struggled to throw away, so i didnt. i got them all in boxes in storage. I prefer the cheaper yellow boxes I could fold flat........

Whoever in the marketing department came up with these new magnetic boxes must have had one of those annoying turn the dial, buzz, ding, bang whiz noisetoys things when they were a tot.

I can just picture it, oh look at the nice box ! Wow this is so cool! Magnetic Box flap opens and closes, clack, clack, this is so cool ! Clack, clack. Shows everyone that comes near, clack, clack, clack. I’m rolling my eyes , shacking my head.

I would gladly see them return to the more simple box that has worked for a century or more. Probably save a ton of money to boot.

Good rant. Now is the title "Stupid Rant About Boxes," or "Rant About Stupid Boxes"? I say the latter. I don't like these boxes, either, though I haven't seen Buck's versions.

Good rant.

Other companies present their premium products in fancier packaging. Buck is just keeping up. I actually like the black boxes. They are more sturdy than the yellow ones and they are classy looking. I like the pouches too. True, we are paying more for the product because of them. Hopefully, not that much. I do agree that they are more problematic to store. My collection of Buck knives has grown to a humble 120 but even with that I agonize over how and where to store them. I have them in plastic bins right now.

I think Buck went with this fancy box because stocking retailers asked for one and Buck figured out how to make it fairly inexpensive. It's the wood boxes I found hard to toss. I tend to keep them even tho I don't want to store them. Sack-Ups is what I use for my 112's because it is the best compact and safest way way to keep them from getting dings.
