Annoying little boogers..kept eating my bait! Nibbling little rats.. is there any way to get them to take the hook?

Theyre small, bottom feeding fish. They have a plate-like spot on their brows. Theyre mainly mud suckers. Annoying little buggers, fun to catch when theyll bite though.

Do they look like this?

For any fish that just nibbles on bait let them take the bait a fairly long time before setting hook and maybe try smaller hooks so they can get it down further.

Try using circle hooks. You will have a better success rates if you resist the urge to set the hook. Just let the fish start swimming away and the hook sets itself.

I remember one fishing trip with my uncle when I was a youngster. We couldn't get the trout to cooperate but came to a stretch of water full of horny heads. Using a small salmon egg style gold hook baited with a single corn kernel we caught fish till we lost count including a few trout that were in the midst of the others. The horny heads turned a slow day into a memorable trip.

I have a similar problem with what we call toad-fish. Little puffers that will clean a hook in seconds. the worst part is, when they do get hooked, its still useless since nothing thinks they are bait. often I'll have 10-20 chase the hook right back to me.
