Stupid Hospitals

A good friend of mine just called. He got a call from the hospital that they finally had a kidney available for him. When he arrives they want to check his heart so they do an EKG. After reading the EKG they tell him he has an arrhythmia and will have to be cleared by a heart doctor. Anyways, the next day the heart doctor looks at the EKG and says there is nothing wrong with your heart. My friend immediately calls the hospital to see if the kidney is available, but it's gone. Someone who is not qualified to read EKGs made the call to abort the life saving surgery for my friend.:grumpy:

Yup, sad to say crap like this happens way, way, too often! :( Smoke and Song up for your friend to get what he needs soon.

I'm sorry to hear this, Ted:( Smoke up for your friend. Hospitals, doctors, and modern medicine have done much to heal many. However, the ball does get dropped and people do pay for it. Ask my father in law about the "we're 100% we got it all!" regarding his colon cancer. Got it all, eh? Well tell me why he is wracked with pain and has colon cancer tumors in his liver, lungs, bones, and brain.

Hospitals do suck. Prayers going up.

Sorry to hear it, Ted. :(
Prayers up for your friend- and hospitals in general. :)

I've seen too many loved ones come out of hospital in a worse condition and with more serious issues than they had entered with hospital due to stuff-ups, mistakes and errors all of which are fobbed off as 'complications' rather than stupid avoidable failings.:grumpy::(

Reminds me of when I was in the hospital for over 2 months fighting chron's. As I recovered they kept getting the charts mixed up. One day I would get food according to what I should get. Then the next day someone reads the old chart and sends me no food and wants to follow old information regarding the dressing changes and meds.

They were in the middle of software changes for their nursing station records. It seemed like many of the staff were lost in this mess.

I have so many stories about doctors and hospitals effing up I couldn't even begin to tell them all.

It's no darn wonder we have so much malpractice suits. It's not frivolous lawsuits it's the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing.

Just like all industry there is a push to see as many as possible and go as fast as you can to up the profit.

Another big problem is there is no way for doctors to view all your medical records, and about half of the medical records written by doctors are totally illegible anyway.

There would have to be massive privacy laws to protect them but we REALLY need to require all medical records to be typed and then there should be some sort of an account that all of them are scanned in to. Then if you are hospitalized while on vacation out of state the doctor treating you can get your whole medical history and find out what chronic conditions you have, allergies etc.

For instance my dad had a test. Then the doctors office told him that he could have a heart attack and to immediately go to the hospital.

When he went to the hospital nobody knew why he was supposed to be there. They attempted to call the doctor to find out for six hours and were unable to get him. They had no access to the testing. They did an EKG, cardiac enzymes, a chest X ray all normal, and kept him overnight.

A few weeks later he had a heart scan, cath, and bypass but basically he had to pay for the tests and overnight stay because the doctor did not do their part.

If his records were in a centralized account the doctor could have logged in read the test and the physicians notes and proceeded accordingly.

I am sorry to hear this, smoke and prayers for your friend

UPDATE

My friend just called to let me know he got his new kidney on Dec 07, 2008. He is doing well and will be home soon. He wasn't amused that we were in the hospital at the same time for different reasons.

I'm so happy for him and his family.

I am very glad to hear you are both still with us! It's easy to get frustrated, realizing people in every walk of life show the same mix of professionalism and incompetence. Unfortunately, in the medical field, the mistakes are more serious than most.

I'm so glad for your friend, Ted:) I'm also thankful that you are doing better:thumbup:

Good To hear that you're both on the mend. that's good news.
Just makes me almost sick that in this day and age that doctors can't do better than they do, and are supposed to.

Perhaps it was a conspiracy to give the kidney to someone with lots more money!

Happens all the time in other countries, I can't see why 'western countries' should be excluded anymore to be honest.

That was my first thought.
A sign o' the times.:(

Merry Christmas to you, and to your friend, Ted.

had to laugh at the title...I could just HEAR the tone of voice, as you were saying that. :)

Kis
enjoy every Sandwich

That's wonderful Ted! And I'm glad you're doing better as well!
I get a stomach wrench every time I see the title to this thread because of Rusty and what the damned hospital he was in put him through against his wishes. That's why the next time that Rusty said if he had to go to the hospital again he was going armed so they wouldn't take advantage of him like that.
And I ultimately blame the hospital for Rusty's walking west like he did.
I feel if the hospital would have honored Rusty's wishes he would maybe still be with us.:(

:( Dallas passed away this weekend from complications of the transplant. It's the first time I've seen my Dad cry. I'll miss him, he was a great guy. At least he is no longer suffering.
