any problems shipping a zt folding knife from USA to Italy using UPS?
just making sure its not illegal for me, dont care about what the deal is on their end, not my concern.

You have to use the USPS or DHL. Don't use UPS, they will just hand it over to DHL. USPS tracking will stop once the package enters the Italian postal system. They are notoriously slow. The individual you are shipping to is responsible for Customs, but you need to make sure you have the US Customs form correctly filled out and attached when it ships.

DHL is faster, but more expensive. And you can follow the tracking internationally. In Germany (which is where I am now) I prefer the USPS, but have used both to send and receive.

also, from my experience, it is always worth checking the various EU sites, Italy has several, to see if the total cost of the knife, after shipping and taxes will be less than actually buying it from the EU, if it is available.

I use USPS First class international, cheapest method for the knives I ship. Boxes have a standard size that needs to be met.

Fill out the custom forum honestly or chances are it will be denied.

^ Me too - works very well. 10 to 12 days is standard delivery time. In my opinion NO SENSE to insure it beyond the basic pre-included insurance. This just tags it with a
RED - STEAL ME - flag. SO - if you go that route you need to be prepared to reimburse the buyer at your expense if the delivery fails. AND that’s the rub with international shipping - unless you use the most expensive overnight Express - there are no guarantees for anyone that your delivery will succeed and, as previously mentioned, tracking with USPS doesn’t follow all the way to the destination.

Having said that - I have had no issues shipping to EU countries through the post office - EVER - for at least a couple of dozen + deliveries.

USPS tracking certainly works to delivery to the door in this EU country. 1st Class Intl. has always been 100% reliable in my experience and I agree, excessive insuring can make for a tempting target for thieves, Customs might be more inclined to want to inspect it too. Plus, I believe insurance is not always valid once a packet leaves the destination country ?

I ordered a knife from Extrema Ratio before they had their USA warehouse. They shipped it with DHL, italy to NY. Took 3 days.

when it comes to Italy anything goes except for autos/otf's and double edged knives/swords.

This. I just shipped a customer in IT non-knife things, and he paid an import tax of 22%, and then whatever duties custom assessed (in this case about 19%, although knives may be less).
