Stupid question from a new guy

There is so much information out there on Busse knives that it is almost an overload situation for a new guy.

I got interested in Busse knives after watching the survival video from Ron Hood.....he was using a Busse in the video but I do not know which one. I am not a collector but I would really like to have a good survival knife like the one he was using or something similar. I was thinking that an overall length of about 14 inches or so would be good, I don't want a sword....but I want something that I can use to build a shelter etc... INFI, 1/4" steel blade...I am not a survivalist guru, but now that I can afford something better than my standard Buck knife, I am ready to "move up". I was thinking of something like a Battle Mistress or a Steel Heart but I am not sure of the differences or if the BM is even made anymore (I don't think it is)....also, for either knife, or an equivalent Busse knife, what sort of price am I looking at?....I know they are expensive....again, I am new to all of this so I hope I have not offended anybody by my naiveté.

Google 'Busse Company Store'...go the site and buy a Fusion Battle Mistress...you'll have it within several days. ($442)

If you wear a Large or bigger glove you should get the Magnum. That's about right. The Hell Razor is a good light bush knife that can handle those tasks, the Steel Heart is a good medium blade, and the Battle Misstress is the Behemoth. Some people (especially those who go to extremes for light gear) probably wouldn't want to hump the BM in the Bush because of the weight. For heavy knives I wear a thick leather belt just for that knife (aside from the one that's holding up my pants).

I wear a large and sometimes xl glove and I prefer the smaller handles.

And as for heavy, try lugging around a 3/8 inch thick khukuri all the time. The BM will seem light by comparison. The Ghurkas and Nepalese people in general use the khukuri and they are small and the knife is big.

The handles are really a thing of taste, but it seems as though larger hands are suited to the magnum handles. If you wear a medium or small sized glove.....the mags probably won't work for you. If you wear LG+ you can use whichever you like because your hands are big enough for either. Maybe that's a better explanation. At least from my perspective.

You could also try humping a 2 handed claymore around, the scots did it :D. I don't think I'd want to though. Different people prefer different things. Yes, the Ghurkas carry such knives around I doubt it's because they intentionally want to carry the heaviest blade possible....I'm sure they carry them out of necessity.

I didn't say the Battle Mistress is heavy for me, but knowing some people go to extremes to have the lightest gear possible, and this guy not knowing how heavy any of the knives are I felt compelled to warn him of the weight. Personally I don't mind the weight at all. I don't find it overly heavy, but some might prefer to carry a lighter knife on longer hikes and such. I know a fella who shaves the handles off his toothbrushes to save weight among other things......everyone is different.

BTW: Mach84- There's no such thing as a stupid question :D. Your's is a good question, many others are probably curious about the same thing.

Actually, I have rather medium hands, slightly wide, and I really dislike the e handles because of their width, but I prefer magnums. Weird, huh?

Thank you and thanks to everybody else who has given their comment. I don't mind the heavier blade and I did not realize that the Battle Mistress was still being made. I was under the impression that either the BM was not being made at this time or that you had to wait months to get one. I will check out the link above.

I also understand now that the Steel Heart is a smaller knife but apparently can do a lot of the same things the BM can do without the weight...what is a good price for the Steel Heart if it is unused?

Again, thank you for the help.

The Steel Heart comes in 3 basic types: SHSH (straight handled around $900), SH-e(ergo handled around $475), and the FSH (fusion handled around $425+ depending on which handles you want MAG/Standard). Maybe someone has more updated prices, but that's about the right price range for all 3. Maybe not exact, but at least in the neighborhood.

No problem, everyone here has been very good to me. It's nice to return the favor ;)

by the way, the knife in that video is the famed SHBM. It is the blade the Cliff, myself and many others have been beating on for 9 years and they take it all while lesser blades have been thrown in the trash.

Ron had three of them. Two without handles and one with. I think all of them are still down in south american being used by the indians and their kids to do general utility work. He was not the only one in his group that had them.

That sounds like it would make a good story  :D

If your hands are wierd, then mine are retarded :D. My fingers arent very long (just barely a LG) but they're very thick and my hands are wide. I broke some fingers jamming them into a windsheild in a car crash some years ago and they didn't heal straight. The magnum scales are just easier for me to grip for prolonged periods of time. I don't like the e handles either.

yah, I remember something about the indians not knowing what they had and they would stick the blades in fire to move coals around and stuff. They also liked them a lot per reports. Chances are the heat treats are not what they were, but they still work and they have a real fine temper:eek:

That's cool man! Those knives will probably be passed down through the generations :D
