Stupid question. Please help.

I used to before I found a store that sell mineral oil. I think it's okay to sharpen with baby oil, but may be not good for coating the blade to pevent rust. Some baby oil contain water in its ingredient which of course will cause rust.Sharpening is okay because you don't exposed to the oil for too long, hence won't cause rust.

Baby oil is just mineral oil with rose scent. There's no water in it. (You can't mix oil with water.)

A traditional Japanese recipe is a few drops of clove oil to a small bottle of mineral oil. That's what I use. Again, it's only to make it smell pretty, but some of us REAL MEN would be embarrassed if our knives smelled like roses.

Yes, you are right. Now I wonder how could I pass that science class. :D

My bad. I must have misread that water based lubricant and that baby oil.

When you sharpen you want your stone to bite MORE in the metal, not LESS. Sharpening oil is not a lubricant, is made to prevent stone from clogging and keeping its pores open. harpening oils are in fact the opposite than lubricants.
