Stupid question. What is the purpose of a lanyard?

To get in my way every time I pick up my knife. Or, if I remember to use it, I put my thumb through it and it keeps the knife from flying out of my hand if I use it as a chopper.

I don't use them however I've always figured they could serve two possible purposes. One, it might make finding or pulling a knife out of your pocket easier (assuming no pocket clip) or two if you're doing a lot of on and off cutting and don't want to put your knife away each time you could just fold it closed and let it hang on your wrist. There may be other uses as those are just guesses.

They can make it easier to pull a knife out of your pocket, specifically with knives that have aggressive texturing on the handles or deep carry clips. It can help with smaller knives to give added grip (think spyderco dragonfly). sometimes it's just a cool way to show off a lanyard bead, who wants to let that $100+ Starlingear bead sit in a box?! Just my 2 cents. :)

I don't mind lanyards if they serve a purpose (i.e. assisting a wave draw or adding grip). Otherwise skull beads make you look like you are 12.

Many purposes - here are a few off the top of my head:

(a) help retrieve from pocket (folders)
(b) add extra length to 3-finger handles (fixed or folder)
(c) wrap around wrist for control/retention (fixed or large folders)
(d) add ease of finding (bright/reflective material)
(e) add ease of identification (between several identical models)
(f) looks cool (purely aesthetic)

I'm sure there's more...

Thoses are knife FOBS attached to the lanyard hole.
look cool..FAD.

Lanyard hole are for attaching a Dummy cord that helps keep you and your
gear together.

I use them on machetes if I'm working around someone else. I'll only use a fob on a pocket knife if it has a deep carry clip.

Another who knows the differance. Keep you and your gear together.

and pretty little thing on the end..FOB.
I have a fob on my SAK. Makes it easier to fish it out of my pocket

What is this "snow" of which you speak?

:D

I was thinking the same thing

Lanyards were invented to keep your tools attached to you, maybe this went back to the cavalry days because I remember seeing handguns with lanyard rings and rifles with "saddle rings".

Nowadays they are mostly used for decoration, gotta have somewhere to put the skull beads. Some people let the lanyard stick out of their pocket so they can grab their knife easier to pull it out. I prefer a knife with a standard pocket clip that leaves enough sticking out to grab. Some people use the lanyard to extend the grip length of the knife, I just carry a bigger knife. I've never used one so I don't know what I've been missing, I just assumed they were more trouble than they were worth, and I don't own any skull beads.
