Stupid question -- What the hole for?

Guys --

After much deliberation, I finally decided to get order the Basic #5. Heck, I even sold my Randall Model 14 so I can afford one. The thing was too heavy for back-packing anyway. Here is my question: what's the whole near the finger guard for?

Additionally, what are the dimensions of the tang underneath the handle?

The hole on the front tine has become a trademark over the years...originally on Jerry's older custom models, the hole was a mounting point for an optional D-Guard..which some older Busse customers protect with their lives, as not many were made.

Now, it can be used as a lashing point, but for the most part, it's a signature.

The tang is full and the lanyard hole goes through it. All corners where the tang widens near the ricasso are radiused for enhanced strength.

It can also be used to lock the knife into the Kydex sheath, which I thought was the official explanation

Here's an old thread.

The locking facility is only for the Basics...the tine hole is on every knife and has been so for a LONG time.

Andy, is there any chance for another run of those D-guards? I was doing some cutting yesterday with a Barteaux machete with such a guard and my Battle Mistress, and the guard on the machete significantly reduced the number of times the thorny stalks removed skin from my hand, which is always nice.
