Came across a model 1 Sunday, with several red spacers. B-s'ing with the seller about the knife, I asked what year it was made. He had no idea, but said that he had heard you could date them by counting the spacers ahead of the stacked handle. Basically, all I know about Randalls is that they have a long waiting list. This one was in almost excellent condition, sheath and sharpening stone too.

Spacer count/configuraton/color/thickness do play a role in dating a Randall but, they are not the end-all of dating. If the spacers are all red then it's most likey a somewhat newer knife. However, you can't say for sure. A good picture posted here will likely get you the answer.

SHS, discounting those Randall knives made pre-1943, after that date, non-leather handled Randall knives typically used seven spacers behind the hilt through most of 1972 (late 1960's on sopme of the smaller models), five spacers on most standard models thereafter...

Spacer type, thickness, number, configuration, and color can all play a roll in determining the approximate age of any given Randall knife (for knives having spacers) - in that spacers (and knife assembly) typically occur shortly before the knife is shipped. Spacer dating Randall knives is an art form with many pitfalls and nuances.

That said, Perry is correct, pictures (or better yet, having the knife in hand) make the job even easier...:)

I would have loved to have taken it home, but I didn't have enough to trade or to buy it with. Actually, the cash I had was gas money.
