What is the function of the detente on frame lock folders? I'm guessing it is to provide regulation to blade tension in the transition from closed to locked up/open. If so why is there a slight catch just prior to lock up? I'm speaking specifically about a Strider but I think others have this feature too. Thank you for elaborating or clarifying my novice ways.

The detent is there to keep the blade from opening unexpected ..... or being a "wrist flick" gravity folder.

Right before lock up ... the ball falls off the blade tang and the locking bar that the ball is attached to contacts the blade tang.

That is what you are feeling when you slowly open the blade right before lock up.

It's just the detent ball falling off the blade prior to the lock engaging. The same thing happens with all framelock knives, it's just more noticeable on a Strider.

Re-read the question. Thought he was talking about closing the blade. Sorry for any confusion.
