When you install your thong tubes make sure the dang thing isn't solid full of epoxy! I'd never managed to do this on any other tubes I've put in so I didn't even think about checking it. I wasted half an hour last night trying to get the stuff out, thought I could knock it out with a punch and hammer. NO deal! had to drill the damn stuff out. Just an example of something that would have been so easy to take care of at the proper time. Maybe I'll plug them with cork in the future to prevent this from happening again.

That sucks!

As far as the cork goes, I'd be wary of putting anything inside, especially something porous. It only takes a little bit of epoxy oozing in to make it stick.

I'd sooner try putting a drop of oil through it once I had it in place so there was something to keep the epoxy from bonding inside it, just have to be careful you don't overdo it and get oil all over stuff.

If you put a wax crayon (minus the paper on it ) through the hole the epoxy won't stick to it and if it does get some in the hole it will be allot easier to remove.Or put a pin wrapped with waxed paper in the hole ,make these longer than the tube and that way the epoxy will not go in the hole if they are a little smaller than the tube.
Just some ideas.

Thanks for the tip Guy
Is that a last minute job before the show. I sometimes do stuff like that when I hurry. I used to use 5 min epoxy. I gave it up to much rush to get everything set.

Just keep some Q-Tips close to the bench. Run one through the tube after installing.

Roger

I fill my tube with modelling clays (Play-Doh).
Easy to remove and less danger to contaminate the gluing
zone with oil or other...

Or, maybe a Q-Tip with Vaseline on it run thru the tube before installation. Works for me.;)

All the best,
Mike U.

Is drilling it out problematic for some reason? You'd think that a few seconds with the drill press would be easier than oiling it or plugging it...though the q-tips would be quite easy.

Well, it's just a bit of a PITA. For me, it's just easier to just Q-Tip it than drill it.

I'm with Roger & Andrew, I have QTips and acetone standing by anyway and always run one through the tube. Cripes man, I'm going to have fun inspecting your work in TWO DAYS!

he he he

Quick, somebody put a bag over Dave's head before he hyperventalates. He's ugly anyway. A sevice both to Dave and the public.
See you there Dave. Look for the white Tilley hat with the ABS pin.
Travel safe...Ken

Dremel tool will get it out. After that use a cratex (rubberized abrasive) to clean up the inside. Works fine.

Well I see most people have thought this problem out ahead of time! Thanks for all the tips. I always have rubbing alcohol on hand for epoxy clean up after glueing because I literally get the stuff everywhere! Believe me I will be checking the tube from now on. Thanks for all the tips for this goofy little deal.

Reg, yes this knife is one I wanted to finish for show and tell at Blade. It's actually the first knife I ever forged and it has been sitting around the shop for years (though Dave might opine that it's been sitting around my shop for an epoch or two!)

Dave I wish I had more stuff for you to inspect. I'll bring the first knife I ever made, the one I just finished (sans sheath at this point) and the tanto and bowie that haven't been heat treated yet.

Of course I have the incredible pattern welded tanto the Reg Ellery made and the box full of eye popping knives you sent me to bring up in my car. Wow are some of you guys going to have a treat in store for you when Dave shows off his knives at Blade! I also have a cool pattern welded blade that Reg Ellery made and sent me from Australia that I can't wait to show off!

Hey Guy, we have at least 24 hours before you have to leave for Atlanta - plenty of time to make a sheath! Just be careful you don't sew yourself to it! (No need to ask why I mention this.) But Hey! there's always next century...

I bet by now John and Reg have decided they are not going to miss another Blade show! he he he

Ken, I'm not that ugly! Now you and Nan owe me your company for dinner! And let's throw Guy in too, what say? That'll teach ya.

Dave
