I live near Ohio, and the legal blade length for carry there is under 2.5". Anything 2.5" or longer is illegal to carry there.

So, what I am looking for is recommendations for a sturdy, durable, fairly ergonomic EDC with a pocket clip and a blade less than 2.5", preferably with a street price less than $50.

Just an FYI...I do not believe that the State of Ohio has such a restriction. Local municipalities may (or may not) have such a restriction.

I once had a Buck Nobleman, the titanium version. It was a good and tough knife with a frame lock mechanism.

lived in ohio all my life, never had an issue, no restrictions on length around me. I have carried an endura, delica, sages, 710, you name it :)

We've got screwy localities around Ohio that do have a 2.5" limit. Akron and Cuyahoga Falls, maybe Cleveland, are a couple.

Take a look at the Buck Alpha Dorado

Or the Byrd Robin

Fallkniven U2 is at 2.52"

There are also a number of short Barlows that fill the bill. Here's one from GEC:

You might also try a Queen Congress. Four blades and none over the limit, but the knife is 4"

There are others but you have to look for them. I think Emerson has a Snubby that's 2.7" which is a bit over the limit and looks tactical.

Then there's SOG, which have a couple

Granted some of these are over your price limit, but they give you some ideas for later. Where I'm at, they also seem to have a cow about one hand openers, so I've gone traditional for the most part.
