Sturdy little knives

Hi all,

I have a Spyderco Mouse and 2 G10 Navigators and I really like those small but tough knives :) .
Offcourse you have the Spyderco Cricket , Kerschaw Chive, CRKT KISS, etc ... (which I own too, some in multiple variants) but these are much lighter/thinner/ ...

I do not know of any other "tough" babies. Any suggestions ?

Thanks,
Philip

It is really small, but I'd think that the Spyderco Toad would meet your criteria. I believe the Co-Pilot might also. I can't remember if they ever did a SS or G-10 Dragonfly, but think they did one or the other.

Also wonder if the smaller CRKT LUS might not qualify. It could be a bit lighter, since it has a Zytel handle. But, at least that handle is grey, not black. I have the larger model, which is one of my favorite CRKT knives. It really fills the hand well for a knife with a 3" blade. Wouldn't think there would be too great a decrease in size down to the small model. The scales are quite thick, and there are double liners. I've never used mine harshly, but have a lot of regard for Lightfoot's designs, and have always felt confident when carrying mine.

Busse Assault Shaker. Not a folder, but tough as hell (1/4" thick) for a neck/pocket (in sheath) knife.

Spyderco also do an Almite Navigator. I have a solid handled one as well as a G10 one and the Almite is definitely more solid. The Almite Navigator available now has a slotted handle which may compensate for the smooth aluminium gripping surface.

THey also do a SS Dragonfly, again very solid but I find the handle less suitable for heavy use.

I'm with you on liking the small stuff, although my current compromise is a Calypso Jr Ltwt. Longer blade at 2.5" but even less noticeable in your pocket.

Thanks for the replies :
. Toad : I think the blade is a bit thin
. SS Dragonfly seems a good idea to try :)
. Umfaan : ouch, pricey
. I have an almite cricket but I am always afraid to break the tip
. I have the larger LUS but the steel is rather soft (AUS 6 I believe), very smooth action though and a great clip but I instinctively did not include it as a sturdy knife, maybe I should have
. Co-pilot seems also a good idea to try :)
. Busse Assault Shaker ???? please tell me more; where can I find a picture and some info ; does Busse have a site ?
. Calypso jr lightweight is on my wish list but is indeed a bit bigger

How about the Buck Mini-Strider? It's a bulldog of a knife - small, thick, and packs plenty of bite. Has a great lock up too.

After shutting down my PC last night, I selected the new AG Russell catalogue as my bedtime reading fare. On page 8 of that rag, I found something called the SLB. That acronmym is for Stout Little Blade, made by Al Mar Knives.

Only has AUS8 steel, and a liner lock, but at least in appearance, it rates it's name. Should it be made in similar fashion to the SR2K, I think it would deserve the name chosen.

I think it is cute! I see it as being a bit smoother in outline than most of the Spyderco offerings, probably because of no need to account for the thumbhole.

While I am a steel snob of sorts, I have to admit that I have had good experiences with AUS6. But, admittedly, I don't use my knives very often or hard. I love it's stain resistance, particularly if it is finished fairly brightly. My LUS locks up extremely well, and has a fairly large pivot for it's size. I also have a positive bias towards Zytel, largely due to the 15-18 years of ownership of a Gerber LST. I carried that knife for all but a bit more than 2 years of that time period. It can be cleaned up to look almost new. The FRN's make many people think "plastic." Plastic = bad to most such folks. I guess my introduction was to "unbreakable" Zytel, which it has proven to be. Again, admittedly, mine has not been subjected to much harsh use. If I had a better memory, I could probably recall some of the times when I have used the LST strenuously, but I don't. That's why I give a 3 year span to the length of time I've owned it.

Anyhow, thought you'd be interested in the new Al Mar cutie.

Edited to change the B for Blade in the knife name from K and Knife which I typed originally. Another evidence of my feeble memory. Sorry if I confused anyone who was led astray in the few minutes before I discovered my error.

Strenghtwise I guess the Mini Strider wins hands down ; anybody still sells the BG42 version ?

The Al Mar SLB (new to me) is certainly great looking (and if the quality is parallel to the smal carbon fiber / ATS34 Al Mar I have it should be one great little knife)

I came across the following (okay, a fixed blade) :

Bugs,
You're right about the Gerber LST. I got mine in 1983 or so, and it has proven to be a very tough knife. Its the one I used most in my four years in the Army. Even though the newer ones don't seem as nice as the older ones, I would still recomend one to anybody. Very easy on the wallet, too. :)

This fat little wedge of a knife has been EDC since I got it a few months back. I find it very handy and, like the rest of the Busse line, a bombproof blade. http://www.bussecombat.com/cgi-bin/hazel.cgi?client=53581791&action=serve&item=shaker.html

The Shaker even impressed my wife, who is not all that enthusiastic about knives in general. Full story here: http://www.bussecombat.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=000117

Call the Busse gang at (419) 923-6471 to order the Assault Shaker or any of the other Busse offerings.

I (very) recently received my Camillus EDC 125th anniversary in black coated 154 CM ; I intend to use it as EDC when my hollidays end and I have to go to work again (in a suit :( ).
I want to see if it is as good as the fuss made around it.
I consider it a bit too slender (good word ?) to be called stubby ...

The Benchmade 705 is way sturdy. A 2.5" blade, but the handle and lock are almost the same thickness materials as the 710!
