Do any of you know of a tin or box that is the same size as the Altoids Tin but a bit more sturdy. I have been carrying an Altoids tin for more than 3 years now, but I have had to replace them every now and then.

I need something that’s the same size but more durable. If it can be water proof grate.
Any ideas?

The problem I have most is the tin getting flattened whenever I have a fall or bang it against something (I live a very active life). Some of the kit I carry in It has saved my ass a few times.

The altoids tin is the perfect size to put on the inside pocket of one of my jackets or in my cargo pants pocket. I always have it on hand, and it’s a pain when I get my tin out and the lid is coming of or its just to banged up to keep everything inside.

Try the survival kit tin small from bepreparedtosurvive.com. It looks to be the same size, and it has a seal. I have no experience with this item.

Look at the bright side Edwood, after smashing an alltoid tin you can still probably open it. I'm not sure a tougher or tighter container would be so forgiving.

That place is called Bestglide, that's where I bought my pre-assembled tin/kit from. They have the containers and a few protective covers and bags. I hope it helps.

Do you get Otter boxes where you are? I have a few which I like a lot. They're very sturdy, watertight, you can run those over with a car. Might be a bit overkill.

Edwood7,

When you are in Southern California, hit-up a Chinese or Vietnamese Restaurant Supply store and you will find multitudes of "Asian lunch tins". These come in sizes as small as an Altoids tin all the way up to about a M16 ammo pouch. Here's a pic that I grabbed off of the internet of the oval ones, but they also come in rectangular boxes that look exactly like the ones used in the Bestglide kits.

CWL,

I never even concidered a "Bento" box. Dang good idea.

I prefer a soft case, I have a little case that was made for holding your camera cards and stuff. It is very durable and RFID scanner proof. It is super comfortable and you don't even know it's there but has saved me a bunch of times.

We're on the same freq there CWL.

I think Thailand's "Zebra" brand of stainless cook and storage ware is well known over there as well as here in SE Asia.

My mug as well as the lunch box I use for emergency items is from them. It is significantly bigger though than the Altoids tin, but there are many sizes, plus you can use it as a mini-casserole to cook/boil and store a lot more. Mine is the model below -

^ Info on its dimensions above.

County Comm has the more industrial ones which I use.

I have some of these on order, they seem sturdy. I left a message for Ed about them as well.

I just got the County Comm tins as well as some from Survival Resources, aka Be Prepared to Survive. The County Comm tins are way thicker and feel more sturdy. The other ones are from China and feel just like an Altoids tin.

+1 on otterbox, or similar. I know pelican makes some nice small cases and I've been using a Plano for a while for the same purpose :)

Otterboxes and peli cases are the bee's knees for toughness, but the smaller ones take up a lot more space than they give you. Unless you are a mycologist, there just isn't mushroom inside them.

There are some rigid clamshell-style pouches designed to carry tomtom/garmin/navigon satnavs, or compact cameras, etc. The few I've tried are still a bit bulky to EDC in a pocket though, at least to me, and I doubt they offer much water resistance.

I've yet to find a perfect one, but there are a lot of possibilities out there.

We just have to think outside the box...
