what do you guys prefer?

i bought the BM635, but the hole was too small and I found that I had difficulty opening the blade. didn't like it very much. i'm going to return it and purchase microtech mini-socom instead.

just wondering what you guys carry. note that the blade length must be under 3.5" so please let's not get 200 posts on the 710/805/manix.

I assume you mean the manual version, but the mini socom elite is very nice. The frame lock is really solid, and smooth. The knife is well built, and very light.

Don't know what kinda' money you want to spend, but the RRF from www.combatelite.com might bear looking in to. It has a 3.25" blade and is built STOUT, but not so stout as to make it unweildly.

The RRF is another folder I really, really want to get my hands on at blade to see if I like it. The never ending search for the perfect edc for me.

As was mentioned, the Spyderco Delica is a great choice, as is the Spyderco Scorpius (almost the same dimensions as the Delica (3 inch blade), just with a little more "tactical" nature to it. And a Choil! ). And who could leave out the great Para-Military! Less than 3.25 inches and the great, trusty "Compression-lock"!

You may also want to look at some of the recently discontinued Benchmade knives (which you should still be able to find), like the 720, the 721 (a little harder to find) and the 722. All three of those have a blade length of approx. 3.25 inches, and the very cool, dependable "Axis" lock!

Good luck with whatever you choose! :)

Coming from the 635, I think he's looking for more of a high end knife than the Delica, nothing against the Delica. I would suggest the following:

BM 520
BM 707
Spyderco Para Military

Here's votes for the BM 707 and 94x series. The 707's blade shape packs a punch in a small package because of a broad blade shape (IMHO, influenced by the Mini-Ritter Grip).
My 940 SBT is one of the few knives I use without fear or damage or lock failure. You could not lose with this one.

If the 635 is too small, try the BM 520. Fills the hand really nicely. 3.42", if I remember right.

Here are some of my favorite folders with less than 3.5" blades:

Spyderco Native III
Spyderco micarta Calypso Jr (now discontinued)
Kabar/Dozier drop-point hunter
Spyderco Delica
Benchmade 556 Mini-Griptilian

Here are two that I have'nt tried yet but they sound good:
Spyderco Centofante 3
Spyderco Atlantic Salt

And if having a premium blade-steel is'nt so important, check out the Buck 112.
It is one hell of a stout knife.

Good luck,
Allen.

The 635 is a sweet knife, but it needs the hole chamfer ground out for a sharper thumb purchase.....or open it with the Spyder Drop method. I was skeptical at first, but it's all good now.
