Hey guys! I'm about to be in a situation where I'm in need of a sturdy folder, but can't have a blade over 3". I also need something that won't destroy pockets like most Cold Steel knives, I'll be in uniform and that shit gets expensive to relace. Preferably no spring assists and autos are out of the question. My budget is $160.
Oh! I'm also partial to Spyderco and I'm wondering if I should just bite the bullet and get a Techno for the extra. Ouple bucks.
I'm slowly kissing my faith in Benchmade, and its just to expensive, so no mpr.

Take a look at the DPX H.E.A.T Its a tough little knife.

Well, if you were still interested in benchmade, I would suggest the mini griptillian. One of mine has seen more than its fair share of abuse, and they are under your budget limit by quite a bit. The dpx heat folder also mentioned would work great.

You said exactly what I'm thinking:

1. get a Techno
2. no mpr

I have both; I'm very happy with the first. The second is a brick with a good blade.

My last couple benchmade purchases haven't gone so well. Nothing major, just little things wrong with the knifethat shouldn't be there at the price point. I'd have to say I do love my griptilian but I'm worried a mini grip wouldn't fit my hand very well at all

Right now it's between the HEAT and the Techno. Still open to other sugestions but how do the two stack up against each other?

I have small hands, and the mini-grip handle is too short. The Delica is a better knife for that reason alone. If you can do exactly 3", the Rat 2 is a mean little knife. I don't yet own a Dragonfly, but it's on the list, too.

For a way under budget option check out the Cold Steel Tuff Lite. It's small, sturdy and won't eat your pants. It honestly sees more use than almost anything in my collection. A big selling point is that, even with XXL hands, I can still get a full grip on the handle.

If your main issue with Cold Steel is that they eat up your pockets, that can be easily fixed with a few minutes of sanding. They make some excellent small, tough and affordable folders (Tuff Lite, Mini Lawman, Mini AK-47, Mini Recon and so on). Most of them are under $40.

A Delica or Salt 1 (should you need extra corrosion resistance), can actually handle a decent amount of hard use.

The DPX HEAT/F is small and tough, cool little knife.

You could look at some Emersons, too. There are a couple in your size and price range.

Delica, Sage, Cat, Chicago, Dragonfly G10. Native after a little file work to take off a fraction at the tip. Several other Spydercos as well. In a Benchmade, if the ergonomics are okay with you, the Mini Presidio Ultra has more handle than the Mini Griptilian. All pretty sturdy knives and all easily within your budget.

That would be my suggestion as well. I have not had any pocket issues with mine. It is modestly priced too.

I am a big fan of the Spyderco Native that is right at about 3" (3.125" technically although it doesn't feel like over 3").

I really like thin blades for so much of my daily usage. I'll carry a PM2, but the knife I reach for most is my Dragonfly. I know that thin tip has to be a bit fragile, but I'm careful. If you like thin blades the FFG DF is hard to beat. For me, the jumping on the thumb ramp and finger choil is a real bonus for precise cuts. But so much depends on what you use a knife for and what strikes your fancy.

Another factor is cost. I'm not necessarily talking about what you can afford. If it costs too much, I may buy it, but I'll baby it too much and it just won't see much use. We're all different in that regard as well.
