Been into this knife collecting thing for just over a year and finally decided to get a traditional folder for an every day carry. In my collecting scheme $100.00 or more would be used to purchaser a nice older knife or for a current CSC, GEC, Queen, or S&M.
I'm semi-retired, small town urban life style, so the knife I get will probably be used for opening envelopes, opening an occasional box, and cutting open those four letter word generating clam-shell blister packs.
I'm thinking two blade Canoe or Gunstock just because I like those patterns, but then I think a three blade might be more practical, so I"m also thinking Stockman.
In the $75.00 range I know Case would fit the bill for a quality knife, as would I believe a Boker Tree Brand. Any other brands and/or patterns to consider?
Thank you!

The new case teardrop jack collaboration with Tony Bose is quite a looker and fits the bill for all handle materials but stag.

Hi, and welcome to the amazing world of traditional knives :)
Add an old US made Schrade OT to the list, as well as a US made Buck 300 series. And try an Opinel before you discard the single bladed option :)
With some luck, you could even get the three of them for not much more than 75 usd (keep your eyes open in the sales section of this website ;))
And let us know what you end up with (with pictures, of course!)

Me being me, I would say get a larger single blade piece, and then carry a Vic Minichamp for the two small blades plus the extra tools. Good day to day setup IMHO.

Like this nice Schatt & Morgan 99, and the Vic can be found used on a large auction site quite reasonable.

Just one thing to add: Get a Case Peanut in yella Delrin ASAP! You will love it and it will be addictive ;)
After that get a nice Peanut from Case in jigged bone or from Queen in D2 and nice wood...
Then apply with the Grand High Muckba and join "The Cult" ... because this is what needs to happen! :D

The only two things I could possibly excuse in straying from that path would be a (Sheepsfoot)-Charlow or a GEC Viper.
Don't forget to join the "Order of the Straight Edge" though if you stray ;)

Cheers,

Is this your first traditional?

If so, my recommendation would be to get 3 inexpensive knives of different styles to figure out which pattern you like the best. I find slip joints end up feeling and working in hand very different than I expect. I need to live with a pattern for a bit to figure out if I like it?

Most of what you're paying for between $25 and $125 is the bling factor, which matters. Before I dropped big bucks on something, I would want to be sure the pattern really works for me.

+1 on A G Russell. Plenty of styles, both import & domestic. His catelog makes great "bathroom browsing" also. Still, I find my Victorinox Spartan my "Always EDC" even if I'm carrying something else.

I have a couple of the Case Trappers (full size) and really like them. Oh sure, I like GEC better, but they cost more too. You can pick up a GEC trapper in that price range if you are not set on stag.

I really really really like the GEC Boys knife single blade, this would be my choice.

If you need multiple blades, my choice would be the multi blade version of the boys knife

If you are wanting a stockman you can do no better than one of the Schrade Oldtimer that can be found here on the exchange or the place that can't be named.

Single blade GEC Boy's Knife or Charlow; just the best at any price.

I agree here. A #15 Boys Knife. My ebony single spear was $65 new and i love it.

take a trip down to your local fleamarket and see if you can pick up an older Schrade or other old slippies for under $25 or so.

Case Sod Buster or Sod Buster Jr. for a first Trad DC. You can buy both for around $75

I have a soft spot for Canoe's I just love them. A Case CV Canoe is on my list of knives to get and I bet will serve you quite well. Though I did just get in a Nifebrite GEC Bullnose and it's an excellent knife so I would also have to recommend that and other sodbusters as well. For me it came down to that Bullnose, AG Rusell Rancher, or Queen Country Cousin for that last purchase.

A GEC #15 Boys Knife in 1 or 2 blades is right in the ballpark for your needs there, if you want the kind of higher-end fit and finish and a really nice knife. You can browse a good selection here: http://gunstockjacksknivesandcollectibles.com/shop/product-category/15-boys-knife

If you want a workhorse of a knife in the stockman pattern, then the Buck 301 or 303 fits the bill. 301 is the larger of the two, 303 the smaller. They are sturdy little tanks, if not as pretty as some others (though that is a matter of opinion, I happen to find them quite pleasing to the eye). Due to their 3-spring collection they are going to carry a little heavier than some, though I find the 303 disappears pretty easily in the pocket. They are also very affordable, typically in the $35-ish range.

All that being said, I have more Case knives than anything else and especially for a light-duty user, they have the widest range of choices in patterns and handle materials. Unless you go for a limited edition or stag handles, you can stay well under your budget with almost any of them.

So your real problem is going to be picking one out of so many choices that fit your requirements and price range. Though you'll do fine with whatever you pick out of the suggestions so far.
