Having picked up a Windlass Kukri from Atlanta Cutlery, I'm back with another knife-buying question. This time, for a fighting knife with a subhilt.

No clip point, under $100, sweet spot around $60 to $75. Where can I find one?

Again, the standard here would be a Cold Steel piece. They make the OSS and OSI knives, for $100, but I'd like something a tad cheaper.

One day (hopefully soon), I'll have income enough to not be guided by price when buying knives. Till then I'll still be a med school student who, arguably, probably shouldn't even be buying knives by the bushel-load in the first place.

I guess there's a good thing about being a teetotaller--beer money goes into knife money :D

You can find the OSS for around $60. I'm not into knife fighting much, but my AUS8 version is superfast and very very sharp. Thin, light, long, evil point... what more can you want in a knife of that type and price?

I picked up the OSS about three months ago. After having been a fan of CS products for fifteen plus years, I have to say this was the first time that I was ever disappointed by one of their products. The guard is flimsy at best and the blade was very dull. Not at all what I have come to expect.

I contacted their customer service department and was asked to send the knife to them, just have not gotten around to it yet. I try and stick with products that I feel have an acceptable (to me) level of quality or generally get good reviews. Maybe I just got a "lemon" once....

The guard is made of kraton, there is no metal inside. Most (if not indeed all) of Cold Steel's kraton-handled knives are like that. I have no issue with it, the idea of catching another knife with the guard is preposterous to me.
As for the sharpness, that IS surprising. Never happened to me yet with Cold Steel, but there's a first for everything.
I think THEY should pay for shipping...

Nothing will come close to the CS in quality for that price. A OSI in AUS-8 steel can be had for around $75.

Yep, and I've seen the Krupp 4116 version for less than $50 on Ebay. I'd get one of those, for a fighting knife that will be carried for SD only, the steel type is really not that important, and the Krupp still comes razor sharp. Also, the Krupp isn't that bad to begin with. ;)
Also, I think the older versions are cheaper at the moment because the new San Mai version is in distribution now.
