I am building a sub-hilt and thought I might show before and after. It is my Damascus of 1095 and nickel that is double ribbon San Mia. All fittings are also Damascus that is also San Mia and handle material is pre-ban elephant ivory. Next step is to put alighnment pins in the ferrule, ivory and finger groved pc. Will add more as it progresses. This isnt an order just wanted to do one for the challenge.

Dan,

Thanks for taking this on. These WIP threads are always of interest to me.

Dan,
Thanks for doing this! Really like WIP threads.
Looking forward to this one.

Doug :)

These work in progress threads give people a good idea how much work goes into making knives. People that can't understand why custom knives cost what they do should read as many of these threads as it takes for them to realize that even high priced customs are a bargain.

your pattern welded steel is amazing. Unlike almost any other I've seen out there. Practical and well conceived, but beautiful in the way only damascus can be.
I'll bet there'd be lots of knife makers out there, Dan, who would love to use your welded steel:thumbup:

Cheers to a challenge, eh!:)

Here is a little progress that took 5 hrs. Cut and drilled bottom cut of ivory now to marry the hole affair. I have also drilled out the alighnment pins (2 for the ferrule and 2 for bottom hilt) as this has to be shaped as one (without bottom hilt) and then re-assembled. In the first photo there is a sacrificial bottom hilt that is drilled with same holes as the hilt I will use (Damascus not attatched). In the bottom photo there is a rod that all parts will bolt together to that will allow me to shape the handle. The sacrificial bottom hilt will be ground off to match the front ivory shape and at the same time match the back part of the handle. Then I can dis-assemble and insert the Damascus bottom hilt and the flow from front ivory will match the back ivory. Hope this makes sense.

Yep, work in progress threads are good for makers and collectors alike and this one looks to be particularly interesting.

Love progression threads! Especially insightful for us relatively new collectors.

This one has my attention because I'm a fan of Dan's work and I have a sub hilt monkey on my back :D I can't stop being drawn to them.

Looking good Dan, keep 'em coming!

Made some progress today. In the first picture I am using the sacrificial hilt to drill pins for the bottom part of handle so will match top. Second pictiure is with pins installed and the bottom part of handle ban be sanded to match top. 3rd picture is after sanding and 4th and 5th are with it on the handle. Now I can carve the ivory. More tomorrow.

That knife looks like it will be a beauty. Thank you for the thread.

I'm curious as to how the tang of the knife is actually secured to the handle / scales. At first I thought the tang was threaded at the end and a nut arrangement would pull everything together, but when I look at the tang it's not threaded?? Or is it threaded and not shown??

Cheers
Frank

Still needs to be sharpened. 1st photo is the blind pins for the buttcapp. Have welded a pc of allthread on the tang so it can screw together. Last pics are knife. Hope you have enjoyed this as much as I have. Blade length is 9 inches overall is 14 1/2. Notice how guard, ferrule, buttcap and sub-hilt are also San Mia. Now to get it out the door.

That is a gorgeous piece - and nice to have been able to see it come together. I really like the bold damascus on this one.
