Anyone have any experience with sub hilts? What is the advantage over a normal hilt?
thanks for your input.

A lot of it is personal prefference. I like the grip I get from a sub hilt. I would chouse it over an otherwise similar staight hilt knife.

Sub-hilts are one of my favorite designs when properly done. Anyone can simply add an additional hilt, and voila, a sub-hilt! But if not done right the added guard simply draws attention to itself and becomes a nuisance at times. When done perfectly however, your fingers just instinctively wrap around the handle in a very secure and comfortable grip. The best I have seen in this regard is the work of David Broadwell (I have not handled any Brend's or Siska's). Very pricey, yes, but worth every penny from the moment you hold one.

Like I said, anyone can make a sub-hilt, but very few make them correctly.

They improve leverage for thrusting and removing a blade. You have a hilt to push against when thrusting (saving your fingers) and when you withdraw the blade, you have a sub-hilt to pull on.

Oh, they look cool too!
