I've been curious to learn more about this style of knife. Was there some historical use for blades of this sort, or is it a more modern design? Does the sub-hilt itself serve some purpose (other than in grip strength and indexing...?) or is it merely an aesthetic feature? Who are some of the popular custom makers of this design?

Ok, seriously, they are just about the sweetest looking knives out there, especially if you can find a nice handmade Sub-Hilt 'Chute' knife...

But, I seriously question their functionality (is that even a word? If not, it should be...lol) as a fighting knife.

Just cuz 'Bob said so', don't make it true (sic)...

The CS 'Black Bear' Classic (cough), is a great knife of this genre that can be found for <$200 if you do your homework (stay away from the junker CS OSS, unless yer ignerunt), and the older Blackjack #1-7 Sub-Hilt's are cool too...

Other's, like those by Steve Voorhis, can be found on ebay...

Good luck in your quest!

Mel (Sub-Hilt collector)
