I know we had that topic before and yes, I used the search function and found some valuable opinions in older threads, but I'd still like to get more opinions about them.

Pros and Cons I know about so far:

- they're great for blade retention
- they're sometimes in the way when it comes to changing from one grip style to another
- they're usually not the best bet when it comes to utility cutting chores (except for heavy tasks, I guess)
- they're comfortable to grip
- they look great

Any input?

For a strictly fighting knife I would consider them ok, they do give a added grip, but with me few fit my hand well enough that I like them so on a everyday use knife I wouldn't want them.

I found on large knives the sub-hilt hurts my finger when chopping. The more pronounced it is the more pain it inflicts.

Most of the sub-hilt knives I've handled have sub-hilts that are either too sharp or too narrow, and are not all that comfortable "in-hand". Also, as mentioned, changing your grip-style with a sub-hilt is pretty much impossible. If total grip-retention is what you are looking for, maybe a grip with (mild) fingergrooves would be better.

Excuse me, but...what is a hilt/sub-hilt?

(The one that doesnt speak english:rolleyes: )

A sub-hilt on a utility knife can eliminate the need for a conventional hilt. The conventional hilt sometimes gets in the way of cutting tasks, like when cutting veggies on a board. The sub hilt can effectively prevent stubbing accidents while not interfering with cutting. It can also permit a variety of secure grips depending on which fingers the hilt is placed between.
