sub-sonics in a 10/22?

WHat happens if I shoot sub sonic rounds in my RUger 10/22? I know it won't cycle the bolt, so it would be one shot at a time, but is this even safe for the gun or appropriate to do?

I thought it would be a nice, discreet way to plink out back without bothering my napping 3 year old (I live in the sticks).

I use Remington subs in mine all the time with a suppressor. They cycle the bolt fine for me. Other sub rounds don't cycle the bolt all the time, but that wont hurt the gun at all. In fact I used to hold the bolt handle closed w/my hand while shooting sometimes before I got a bolt lock.

It should be safe as long as you are mindful to make sure each and every round goes down range. If you hear a shot that doesn't sound right, make sure the barrel is clear before firing another just to be on the safe side. (But this is normal safe shooting thinking with or without subsonic ammo) I've never had a squib with subsonic ammo in a semi auto .22 rifle as long as it was quality ammo, though.

Aguila says it's Sniper SubSonic .22 ammo will operate any semi auto rifle or pistol, but I've never tried it.

I don't know if you've ever shot .22 subsonic before, but, although it is noticeably quieter than regular ammo, it still isn't what I would call "quiet".

If it will not damage the rifle, then I'll give it a try.

As far as quietness, I don't expect silence but I would settle for .22 Short volumes.

Sub sonics are fine. A lot of people shoot them in their 10/22's. I prefer minimags though.

My 10/22 is so old, the recoil spring is weak, so it cycles Remington Subsonics just fine.

Yeah, you'll be fine; it shouldn't damage anything. And, yes, it will be approximate to a .22 short in sound. I'd say you are good to go!

In this thread, the last post shown on the forum index is from 8/15. If I open the thread, my post of 8/25 is the only post shown after 8/15. No new posts appear after my post.

I have no problems with any other forum.

And entry and posting is VERY slow.

you won't hurt anything, and thre is so much aftermarket 1022 stuff you can get a recoil spring specifically for match grade subsonic rounds.

I'm not much on conspiracies. What is not explained by human shortcomings is usually explained by open declarations of intent to do wrong -- rather than secret dirty work at the crossroads.

None of our 10/22's will cycle reliably with subsonics. Don't think I've shot the remingtons so maybe they'd be fine. A softer recoil spring should be all that's needed for 100% reliability.
