Subcom F in 440C and G-10?

I'm shopping for a Subcom F and am finding that a lot of websites list the Subcom F as having a 440C blade instead of AUS8 (although to be accurate, some of those sites list the blade steel as being both 420J2 and 440C) and G-10 scales instead of FRN. I'm assuming these are all incorrect and that Boker hasn't changed the Subcom F from AUS8/FRN, but can anyone confirm?

Thanks in advance.

Some of CLB's designs have G-10 & 440C, but the Subcom series (Subcom, Subclaw, Wharcom, etc.) all have FRN & AUS 8. I believe the 1st Subcoms came in 420J, but they don't now.

Actually I'm pretty sure the Subcom FB is 440C and not AUS 8, which is the only reason why I thought there might be some possibility that Boker also went with 440C for the Subcom F in '09.

There were some Subcoms in 420J at one time. I'm not sure what is currently being used.

Maybe I misunderstood. I thought the OP was asking about the Subcom F folder. If so, those are made in Taiwan & have FRN & AUS 8 steel. The Subcom Fixed blade & other CLB knives made in China have G-10 & 440C (Imported, from what I understand).

The original Subcoms used 420J, but those were quite some time ago & I don't know when they stopped using them. IIRC, I believe they used AUS 8 since at least '06.

Aloha krick,

Thanks for your interest in the SUBCOM F.;)

You are correct, there is a lot of garbled info out there regarding the materials used on this model...much of which was caused by lack of communication.:o

Anyway, current REAL model BO589, the SUBCOM F has a FRN scale with a steel liner beneath it, and the blade steel is AUS8.

Hope this helps, and please...be aware of the fake models out on the market right now. Buy from a reputable place, like New Graham Knives, AG Russell, etc...

God bless and keep us posted!

Thanks everyone.

As for the fakes, I know what you're talking about Daywalker. The real shame is that I see a bunch of what are obviously fake Subcoms being sold on eBay for basically the same price as the genuine articles cost through NG, AG, etc.

I was not aware that there were so many fakes. How does one distinguish a fake Subcom?

Aloha tradja,

Well...............they usually have been appearing in the form of all black bladed and in PE. I have seen fake SUBCOM Folders and recently a DIREKT Folder. Only thing is, these do NOT come in black PE. "They" use our logos and everything, only they kinda screwed up on mine though...instead of "CLB DESIGN" it says something like, "CLB DESION".

Not only has Boker been subjected to this, but if you go to my friend Rod Bremer's site, CRKT...man, they copy his stuff to the exact...with only minor changes in ad colors and such. Spyderco, BM...I guess everything that is popular gets copied by these bastids.

Your BEST bet is to buy from a reputable company, or factory direct.

God bless and be safe!

Hey krick,

Naw, the real shame is that after companies like Spyderco, Boker, CRKT, etc. spend thousands of dollars getting a product fine tuned and finally into production, here these bastids come and just rip it off. Only thing they need to do is get a "sample" and set the machines, and that's it. No thought process on their part. No R&D, sometimes over and over again for them either.

Yeah, the fakes are either sold for the same prices OR they go for about $6USD...PppPppfffffFFFfFffffffTtTttttttt...

Ah well...just be safe and buy smart.
God bless!

Thanks Daywalker. I'm sorry that your hard work and ideas are being stolen, along with those of other designers and manufacturers. As if this industry wasn't tough enough!

My Subcom FB is 440C and made in the US (by Ontario). Not sure about newer models.

True that.

Good thing is despite the pit falls, scumbags, and rip offs we have folks like Chad and companies like Boker, Spyderco, CRKT, etc willing to take the risk and make the necessary investment in time and money to produce extraordinary knives like the SubCom at rates we can afford so there is no reason to support the scum bags

Hey tradja,

Yeah well...if Boker manages to get one seller to stop "advertising" the fakes, they disappear for awhile and then pop up again, sometimes under a different seller name. But with my "day job", I kinda built up a tolerance for idiots and thieves.

Mahalo for your kind words though, and I speak on behalf of all companies getting ripped off...

God bless!

Aloha kiahs,

Kicked an email to your site...

Um, the only American made design of mine is indeed the SUBCOM FB. The MPT is Taiwan IIRC, and the EDIT and RNR are China. I think I had asked you this before, but do you own the "ever collectible reverse CLB Design logo" SFB?

God bless and finish that site of yours bro!!!;)

Aloha sir,

Long time no see! Hope you have been well.

I agree, the companies you mentioned produce some top notch knives at prices us "working folks" can actually afford. Being the only one supporting my household, I am thankful for that fact...

Thank YOU for your kind words sir, and see you over at the "other place"...

I think the opposite would happen being surrounded by low lifes all day would have you fed up. I know I could not do your job or LEO one day I'd see some child molester or baby killer laughing enjoying his life and that would be the end of it and I would be on death row.

Being the only one supporting my household
Wow that is a major accomplishment in Hawaii. I know more than a few folks that have two or three jobs to get by on there.

Got it bro. I've got a scattered pile I need to reply to. I'll get back with ya Tonight or in the morning.

Only in the mirror. Does that count? :p

God bless and finish that site of yours bro!!!;)

Eh, it's about as done as it's getting for now. I keep meaning to add stuff, but I'm easily distracted. I'm gonna get caught up on orders and take a few days off. Hopefully get some stuff added then. Probably go back to the old layout, except actually working this time. ;)
