Subcom FB Revisited

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of Chad's Subcom series...I want to refocus on the Subcom FB as terrific SD tool for someone who wants a small fixed blade that conceals really well and has tremndous cutting power. I recently contacted Potterma cause I was thinking about a mod where I would put some slabs on the handle of this fixed blade. After some PM's with him I started exploring some different options as I didn't like the feel when I put paracord on the handle. I am still thinking about the possibility of letting Potterma do something special in the way of giving me a non-slip handle mod so as if it should ever get slippery from lets say for example blood where it could prevent and not jeapodize my grip on the knife. In the meantime I went to Wal-Mart and did some wrapping with leather Wilson Tennis Wrap to the handle, wrapping from just behind the finger choil back to the lanyard hole...I place extra creating a palm swell in the center of the knife...The result are simply amazing, the control feel and handling has increased so much it's has suprised even me....non-slip security has increased. The knife doesn't budge in the hand and it smoothed out the edges and cushion them around the handle for a real comfy fit. Comma Cuts seem to be more effective as well as slashing ability has been enhanced....Doc:D

A Subcom FB? Isn't it too short for SD?

Great idea with the tennis grip though for the handle. I've been looking for a solution for my Subcom. Thanks.

Ludwig....There is no such thing as a blade too short for SD. The Subcom Fixed Blade is bigger than a Subcom F (folder) by quite a bit, and I would, if in a pinch certainly use one of those for SD if I had to. The Spyderco Ladybug...now that's a small blade by comparison....Held in Scalpel grip position it can be a devastating SD tool inflicting nasty wounds in the hands of someone who knows how to use it....I guess what I'm saying is there is no such thing as a blade too short for SD...certainly not in the hands of the skilled...only those who are short on skill...Sure given the opportunity to carry a larger blade for SD is ideal but it won't make up for lack of skill in how to use it effectively. Bottom Line is this, the Subcom Fixed Blade is a most effective SD tool...I carry one on my person, everyday, everywhere and will continue to do so. There are even occasions where it is the only knife I am carrying and in no way do I ever feel or think I am poorly armed...Doc:D

Bah... Doc, with your skills, the only way you can be poorly armed is if you've lost all four limbs, and even then...

I see what you're saying. In the hands of someone who is trained and knows how to use it, even a pen knife could be deadly, let alone the Subcom.

I EDC a Subcom FB sometimes as well, and it has never let me down.

Howzit guys!

Oh Chad...you don't want to see this one...I destroyed the beauty of the Subcom FB good looks....Think how it would look with a bunch of like black electrical tape wrapped around the handle with extra in the middle to create a palm swell...yuk!!!! I went for function on this one...all I have to do is convince Potterma to do a little something special in some really good looking polished colored micarta and I might have something worthy to look at...till then...YUK!!! :o LOL
