Subcom fixed blade

I'm thinking about getting the subcom fixed blade, and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with it. How's the 440C, the HT, the ergos. The sheath doesn't look very versatile to me - what different kind of carries does it allow, can I put a clip on it?

Lastly, does anyone have suggestions for another small, 2 inches (crazy LA laws) fixed blade for under 50 dollars?

Thanks

I have yet to handle a SubCom fixed blade model.

On that note, I can recommend another small, sub 2-inch fixed blade in your price range. Check out the Buck Hartsook; I believe its performance would be superior to that of the SubCom anyways. It is made from CPM S30V stainless steel treated by a process designed by Paul Bos. Its sheath retains the knife well, and fits perfectly in the watch pocket of jeans or in the pocket of a button-down Oxford shirt without leaving telltale lines. It is excellent for EDC---I carry mine as a backup to my Spyderco Military (we don't have those crazy knife laws here in Ohio). I highly recommend it, and it can be had for about twenty bucks here on-line. Check it out!

God bless you, America, and our men and women overseas.

I'll definately be considering the hartsook. s30v and paul bos HT for less than 30 dollars seems like a pretty good deal

the TOPS wolf pup is under 2" for the blade. its definitely bulkier, but you have the option to horizontal and vertical carry and it feels good in your hand. can be found for about $45

The Hartsook is freakin' small. Make sure you look some comparison pics first, it is in NO WAY in the same size/use range. Looks like a cool little knife, but it is very little. ;-)

I have both ansd I totally agree with Darth; it's like comparing grapes and watermelons. I like the Subcom and it keeps a prertty sharp edge. It is not an EDC due to the sheath. It is not versatile. I prefer to carry my fixed blades in my back pocket or IWB. So, if you like the knife, your options are limited to leather or kydex that let's you carry the way you prefer.

wolf pup looks great, but the blade is too long. i guess my best bet so far is still the subcom

actually, i was wrong about la laws, the max for fixed blade is 2.5 inches, so the tops wolf pup is still in the running. does anyone have any experience with the tops baghdad box cutter?

For a little more, you could get a custom from one of the smaller makers.
Just throwing it out there. Chase Axinn made the second prototype of the Subcom FB.
Or check out some of the offerings in the Knifemaker's For Sale forum.

You mentioned 'crazy LA laws". As I live near LA county and hike in it, I too want to remain legal. From this post http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=546516 it appears that legal carry is 3" blade limit for fixed and it must be unconcealed. I wear my knife on belt for hiking/trail jogging. I am currently having made or have purchased several offerings from custom makers here on BF that fit the bill. All have cost between $65 and $115 dollars delivered and include custom made sheaths. It has been a pleasure doing business w/ these makers as they were open to tweaking their designs to my needs and aesthetic preferences. I can't stress how above and beyond these craftsmen have each gone to make sure I get what I want. Right now I got four coming and wait time has been 2 to 3 weeks at most. I have some pretty decent production folders and fixed blades, but none get out on the trail anymore.
