OK, I'm on the fence about this one so I thought I'd seek out some enablers to give me a push. :o Knife budget has gotten tight and I have to choose wisely these days. Can some of those who own and use one tell me something about it's pluses and minuses, what it's good at, not so good at, that sort of thing. My main use would likely be general utility around the yard and/or wandering through the woods. Thanks

The SubCom fixed is a very good little fixed blade, but I would look at the
Edit, also by CLB. I find more favor with that one.
Thanks, Terry

Haven't handled the Edit, but do own the Subcom FB
Basically, it's a wide drop-point that's fairly thick stock AND has a very thick edge - with some reprofiling, and cord-wrapping or custom-scale work, it could turn out fairly decent. With the factory edge it's pretty bad at making fuzzy sticks, but works well for splitting small pieces of wood and planks. Plenty of edge strength - also used it during some PVC pipe installation to clean off cut ends and cutting wire/fasteners - just some dulling, no real damage yet. Will have to reprofile to make it an efficient cutter (like the design suggests it should be).

I suspect the sheath for the Edit and the FB aren't too great in the long run, but from the few reports, the Edit's is loose. Don't have that problem yet with the FB.

Great Knife...One of Chad's favorite designs of mine....I love it for pocket carry, a little bit a grip tape on the sheath's spine helps with a super fast draw....just a push with the thumb pad and out slips the knife...The knife has great cutting ability....I just wish this knife came with a wharncliffe blade...nothing wrong with the blade thats on the fixed blade Subcom now....Great all purpose knife for all chores and doubles as a nice back up self defense tool...Doc

Well I took a long look at the Edit and it was looking pretty good. I eventually realized I didn't really want to give up any more blade length so I decided to stick with the Subcom. It's a little thicker so maybe less efficient as a cutter/slicer but the extra durability will be a plus for my usage. I'll likely have a slipjoint or two with me for for the finer stuff. Thinning the edge will be necessary but that doesn't bother me much. Thanks everyone for the input and darthsoaker for the video link, that was very useful.:)

Aloha Blue Sky,

Hey thank you! And please keep us posted on your SFB...BTW, check your logo when ya get it. I wanna know if ya get one of the "sought after" backwards CLB logo SFB's!!!:p

FWIW, my SFB has split wood, whittled, has been thrown, and even took down small "trees". For FINE work though, I am glad you'll have another knife for that. However, one of my Sgt's ran his on a diamond rod, and he skinned a goat with it. De-boned it, decap, and everything!

So please, keep us posted.

God bless and mahalo!

Well it's on it's way and the waiting begins... Maybe I'll pair it up with my Lava to keep things all in the family. :)
