Ok, I am sure this has been asked and answered before...but I searched and couldn't find it...

on this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejrac4DKLXw&watch_response

it shows a lock failure on a subcom....

the comments suggest its because of how he is holding the knife...

I just ordered a plain edge subcom and a rescom today....

I need a couple of small knifes to carry as I just resigned from my LEO job to attend school full time...and I don't think the school will be happy with my Spyderco civilian or endura on campus:mad:

but I figure since I am going to MSC gunsmithing program to get my A.A.S. in gunsmithing I can get away with these small knifes....

mostly I am posting this because of my curiosity:)

Aloha Burningcort,

Um...okay, so what's your question?:D

I saw this video, and it didn't worry me in the least. All my peers who own Subcoms tried the spine whack, and none of them failed. I have tested...er, okay, ABUSED the cr*p outta my designs and I have thrown the SF, slammed it into phone books, performed slash tests on whatever...

The locks have NEVER failed.

Also, be advised that there have been thousands of these knives sold. If lock failure was an issue, I am certain we'd have heard about it by now. Only thing is that dude who has that vid on youtube, which means nothing. What WOULD mean "something" is seeing the lock fail while this dude held the SF how it should be held. That's what I wanna see...

Like I said, if you are in the habit of holding your knives the way this person does the spine whack, and you are in the habit of hitting the spine hard on things, than it may be a concern.(Even though we could not make the lil' SF's lock fail when held in that manner).

True, ALL locks can fail, but I have yet to experience for myself, or hear from anyone else about their SF lock "failing" on them.

No worries Burningcort...and thanks for your support!;)
God bless and take care:cool:

I didnt think it was an issue or I wouldnt have ordered the two knifes.....

Thanks for the response...I bet Ill be happy with them

oh yeah and does anyone sell replacement or different colored handles for these things...I guess they are called scales?

Mahalo Burningcort,

Thanks again, and no worries, the SF's and SFV's (Subcoms and Subcom Variants) are safe, handy lil' knives.

There is one master of the SF Scale molestation...he goes by potterma here, and he is definitely worth checking out. In fact, check out some of the threads here...they display a lot of his work.;)

God bless and mahalo much:cool:

I was born in raised in hawaii but it has been many years since I was there...cant remember any of the language I learned....but thanks for the info...BURN

I'll stand behind these little knives. I own at least one of every variation. Hard to imagine someone being dissatisfied with it. ;)

I have carried a Wharcom every daysince they were release in U.S. The only time I do not carry it is when I have a Trance in my pocket. I have never had a problem with either.

My opinion on this is that you cant go wrong with SF. They are very well made and just for example, my byrd raven has a significantly weaker lock then any CLB boker knives. If i open raven with just a bit too much force the lock engages to the point it becomes almost permanent fixed blade. I have to apply a lot of pressure to unlock it. If i tryed to open it a bit more aggressively the lock would probably brake. I never had any problem with any of my SF's or Trance and i open these knives with every opening method i know on daily basis. I'm not trying to put down byrd line or anything, but i seen cara cara that had a lock brake with not so aggressive opening method, my raven's lock is not so good to put it mildly, so it seems to me that because of one video about SF lock failure (which is not a proper handling of a knife in the first place) there is concern where there is no need. CLB boker knives are very very well made. Much better then byrd knives. IMHO, much better then many knives on the market.

I own several SF's and a Trance, and can say that there is no problem with lock strength. Can't even see why it would be an issue as deep as the choil is.

+1 on potterma for putting different scales on the CLB tools. He does excellent work.

Yeah, I know they're old pics (and CF on these beauties is so passe), but I just love posting them.:D

Now passe at all GR. Those are some good looking knives. You have good taste!! :)

I have tested every Variation of the Subcom F for lock failure....even with the spine whacking....never had a problem with any of them....and I can whack....never a failure of the lock to date on any model....Doc:D

Okay... so let's say that the lock does fail. Not really an issue if you're holding the knife right. With your finger in the choil I would think the worst you could suffer would be a bruise if you where really putting some serious pressure on the knife.

Aloha dedguy,

Nice seeing you here! Exactly...very worst is ya smash your finger. Key sentence in your post though: "Not really an issue IF you're holding the knife right."

God bless and I am still after one of your Guyvers!:p
