I just received my first CLB design, a Boker Wharcom. I remember reading about people modding their Subcoms to remove the thumbstud and use the hole left as an opening hole. I was interested in doing this to my Wharcom and was wondering if there are any specific ways that work well to do this bfore I go mess up my knife trying something else.

Great knife by the way. Has one of my favorite steels (AUS8) and is one of the few tactical style folders with a thin blade that cuts better than it pries. ;)

Mahalo Vivi,

"Pliers, twist and pull"!:p I am pretty sure that's all there is to it, although I have read that doing so *might* mar the blade a bit. The stud has a male/female connection, although I don't know which side is which...

I know a few guys who modded their SF's by removing the stud should chime in.

Hang in there and thank you!
God bless:cool:

Hahah, I'm hoping for a more elegant way of doing this in case I ever feel like putting it in. It works a lot better than most thumbstuds I've used, but I still prefer opening holes and think it'd be worth a shot. I'll see if anyone else has some suggestions before going with yours. ;)

Aloha Vivi,

I think there is no other way...and once ya remove it, that's it...no putting it back in.

The stud works best hitting the "sweet spot"...the corner closest my logo, and PRESS it open.;) Try that for now until more developes regarding the stud removal.

God bless and mahalo:cool:

Thanks, I saw your tip on opening it in another thread and it really helped. I also noticed that the thumbstud works well as a wave. I keep it in my watch pocket and after some practice I'm getting about 90% success on draws. I think I'm going to rough it up a little with some sandpaper to help it catch and just use it like this for a while, it's kind of nice. If I do remove them soon though I'll post pictures of my results.

Aloha Vivi,

:D !!! I sure hope the pants pocket ya practicing on or will be using the wave method is..."expendable"!:p

God bless and play safe:cool:

 ...ya got pics of the stud pieces? I have never heard of this happening...

God bless:cool:

i do not..id open and close the very handy knife maybe a dozen or more times a day, and i was never kind to it. if i had known how cool it looked without thumbstuds i would of removed them the day i got it. great design!

Aloha jakeyjake4528,

Okaaaaayyyyyyyyyy...MAIN thing is you are still happy with your SF. Too bad, I'd have liked to see the studs after they fell off.:(

Enjoy the "new look", and God bless!

The way I remove the thumb stud, if I want to preserve it, is to slip an Xacto blade under the corner and pop it off. If you are VERY careful, you can remove it without damaging it. Of course, replacing it requires some epoxy to hold it in place since it is not a "serviceable" design.

I might try that with a Vic Classic sometime soon, it's tempting. I'll post photos if I do.

EDIT: 5 minutes later and I went ahead and did it :D Popped right off, thanks for the tip Potterma. Here's a quick photo:

If I ever do that again I'll make sure to have something ready to catch the thumbstud. I had the half that I popped off fly clear across the rom and get hidden in a pile of stuff on a table in the living room.

hello vivi,

but tell me, its easier to open the blade now by the open hole or it was easier before?

I popped the stud out of my wharcom with a pair of dykes. The stud came apart fairly easily and did not scratch the blade whatsoever. Nothing broke either, so I think I can put it together again if I need to. However, I like the knife a lot more now. I did not like how the thumb stud caught my pants pocket, now it just comes out smooth.

Someone in another thread told me it was pressed in and all you needed to do was knock it out with a hammer. They said it was pretty hard to get out and it needed a few pretty good whacks with a brass hammer.

I actually found it a little harder to open, and I usually like opening holes much more than studs. Plus, like I said I've been using the thumbstud as a Wave. I've been carrying the Wharcom in my change pocket, usually with a SAK of some sort. The wharcom is nice for quick cuts, pull it out, cut, then close. If I wasn't so fond of using it as a Wave I might pop it back out though.
