Subdued finishing by hand...

A friend left me with a CS Culloden in polished Carbon V blade. It has several bad scratches and oxidation (not the red rust, just brown/black coloration to the blade). After I re-profile the blade I wanted to polish the scratches out for him with sandpaper, changing grades until I have a mirror finish. He doesn't want a polished blade, but a subdued one. How can I remove the scratches in the blade and leave it with subdued frosted or satin finish. I would prefer something that I can do at home.

Sorry if this has bee previously covered.

I recommend sanding with 120 and 220 grit until you have removed the oxidization and scratches. Then progess up in grits until you reach a finish you like the looks of. I then go one grit higher before going back down one grit for the final finish. For example, if I get to 400 grit and like the look, I go up to 600 grit to remove sratches up to 600 and then I go back down to 400. At this point you should have a consistent 400 grit finish. If you want a 600 grit finish go up to 800 or 1000 grit, and then back down to 600. I'm sure you get the idea.
