Subdued Red Black G10 question

Hi makers,

I've been working on some Red/Black and Blue/Black G10 for some time now, I've gotten some experience with G10 as a handle material. This is the second time that I'm thinking that this is some defective Red/Black G10.

It looks light red and gray off the file, but any kind of oil or finer sanding will make it Uni-Black. This is unlike Blue/Black G10 that I've gotten from the same source (Jantz/knifemaking.com). I've tried Wet-sanding with 100, 400, 800 and 1500 but none of those in combination or alone will bring out the Red

If I can get any advice or a direction, that would be great. Thanks in advance everyone

In this picture, the entire piece has a file finish except for the darker oiled spots. The Camera picks up the red in good lighting but in person the oiled part is very much entirely Black.

Now these two pictures are Blue/Black G10 from the same source. It sands well and it's easy to get it to shine with 1500grit sandpaper.

All of the red/black and blue black I've used comes out much darker. The red/black usually has a bit of a deep brown look to it. Not sure what advice to give, but I'd ask the supplier if the product changed.

I'm quite puzzled by this as well. This is the only Red/Black G10 I've used and it hardly seems normal because further sanding/ polishing does not alter the problem at all.

I got off the phone with Jantz, they told me I got it too hot; I found that incredibly hard to believe since I did the work by hand with a File. I suggested to send it back to them and see if they can find the problem themselves and they agreed.

I'll post back here when I get a call from them, hopefully with a solution

I've had the same results from the Jantz red/black. It looks really dark, and the red can only be seen under a strong light.

Im hoping the blue/black has more contrast.

The only quality red/black G10 I'm aware of is sold by http://www.knifekits.com It is expensive.

I've tried other sources of red/black G10, and it always turns out like yours did; essentially brown and black.

Thank you both for sharing that with me. I'm disappointed to say the least.

Let's see what Jantz makes of this

Whats it look like if you put a very light coat of mineral oil on it?

The Darker spot on the first picture is Silicone oil, I don't have any mineral but in my experience Silicone works the same to bring out colors.

The Blue/Black G10 is oiled with Silicone as well

I missed that! Looks like you have 3 colors in that one black, tan and green at least on my computer screen
