Subdued Wire Clip?

I really like the spyderco wire clip because it allows deep carry and is relatively discrete, I'd liked it even better if there were a black or subdued version of it. Does anyone sell one? Or will I have to modify one myself?

Yes. The Sage 1 has a darkened version, almost black (probably like a gun metal gray is the best description). Also the Caly 3 and disco'd G-10 UKPK's had a bronze colored wire clip.

I'd call up the Spyderco Factory outlet store and order a Sage 1 clip if you want a subdued color. It should be about $7.

The Sage 1 clip is darkened, but is still polished and shiny. I still think it's way less noticeable than a regular polished clip. Just so you know...

perhaps painting it yourself will suffice. I suggest rustoleum grey or black (regular paint with no gloss). Prime the clip with some sanding. Wash and degrease it. Apply the paint (try to get only one even coat on if possible). Avoid making the paint drip. When it is dry apply a finish. For my clips I unwisely used a gloss finish so it still shined. However if I were to do it again, I would try using a Rustoleum matte finish or a regular finish. Apply about 2 coats.

It will cost you around 8 bucks or less and you can do it for your other clips.

I've thought about painting the clip on my Manix 2, I was worried it would chip out too quickly though. How well has the paint held up edcrefiner?

I think you can darken the silver colored Spyderco wire clips by doing a DIY heat treat. I haven't tried it though. I was lucky and my Caly 3.5 came with a bronze colored wire clip that is very discrete, (just the way I like it).

You can darken it chemically with selenous acid and diluted copper chloride/copper carbonate. IF you can still find these. It's highly toxic stuff I got from my grandmother. A dip in there turns it matte black in like 1 second flat. Holds up extremely well too.
Onces it drys its safe as well.

I love the look of there tempered wire clip. I ordered a few, and put one on my Sage1. It now looks much better IMO.

I wonder what your grandmother was using those chemicals for? :) Any idea what the usual uses for these chemicals are and where one could obtain some?

Well its a mixture that was actually used for blackening steel. Its called "blacken-it"
Its got nice poison pictures all over it and says it can cause blindness if if inhaled! Scary stuff but it works within a second no joke. Ill make a video with my iphone of it give me a minute.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-BBihDTN8w SKIP to 1min 30 to actually see where i catch it on film... It also says not for stainless but I've used on on a few clips which I would assume are stainless and it works fine.
Was kinda hard to do while holding a camera. I normally just dip stuff in it. Only thing I had that I wanted to blacken was this machete. I'm gonna get a small spray bottle and put it on with that and see how it works out.

Just chopped thru 2 6inch thick pieces of dried red oak then battoned them in half with the machete. The finish held up pretty good.
