I recently built a lightweight little knife using the subhilt concept. A long handle and "subhilt" provide a variable effective blade length and a limited "chopping" ability in a paring style knife. The subhilt also provides some grip security without a normal hilt to interfere with cutting or carving.

Pictures and a small writeup are at http://www.tx3.net/~howardw/knives/WASP.htm .

I'm interested in any thoughts on the design, and suggested improvements or variations on the concept.

People have been using knives for a very long time, and I'm sure this idea has surfaced before. I just haven't encountered it.
