Is there any difference besides thickness and depth? I currently wear a Tag Heuer auto Aquaracer.

What about the differences between the Tag and the Sub? Same depth.

Your Tag. and the Rolex sub. are pretty similar in dimentions, not much between them really.

I have the very same Tag as you have and its a superb watch. Im thinking about a Breitling for my next piece. Never really been a fan of Rolex.

The SD's depth rating is greater than the Sub but yet again Rolex has managed to outdo itself with the forthcoming release of the DEEPSEA, tripling the depth rating from 4000 ft to 12 800 ft.

I have an SD myself, replaced the band with black/gray ala 007 NATO strap. (I am currently in the process of replacing it with a Hirsch sharkskin strap though)

Not a big fan of the cyclops lens and I like the exclusivity of the model; personally, I have not seen anybody that owns another SD besides myself. Most have been Subs, rare are the two-tones.

Any way to remove the lens?

The cyclops lens is easy to remove and also easy to add to a watch that doesn't have it, if you like the things.

as stated the cyclops are easy to remove.

IIRC the sub has a little slimmer case vs the SD,& the SD has nitrogen(?) in it because of the depth rating,

i really like rolex, i prefer the GMT to the sub or SD though, imho the bezels look better and i dont dive very much anymore.

but before i had my GMT i had a sub & liked it too,

if nothing else rolex is a good investment, has been for me anyway, my wife got me mine when i graduated grad school in '00 cost was $3250 LNIB, i can sell the same watch now, used, for ~ $4K probably closer to $5K and have got to enjoy wearing it pretty much every day for the last 8 yrs,

The SD does not have a pressurized case like some other watches out there. Under the extreme pressures during a dive gasses such as helium can be compressed to the point that they can slip passed the seals of the watch and enter the case. The SD as well as many other brands Doxa, Stowa etc. have an automatic gas escape valve to prevent crystal "blow-out" during decompression as the gasses within the case begin to expand. Other brands such as omega have manual valves and a few such as IWC do not have valves at all stating their watches can handel the decompression stresses without one.

Sinn is well known for useing Argon to pressurize watch cases to prevent moisture intrusion as well as copper sulfate capsules. Some of their quartz models are oil filled to obtain extreme depth ratings (practically water proof).

I love my SD it is a real classic. I own many different watches from different companies but the SD gets the most wrist time. Rolex has discontinued it in favor of the new Deep Sea Sea Dweller so if you decide to go the SD route if you want it new you might want to do it sooner than later. If you look on the secondary market no real rush but I have no doubt that the prices will continue to rise in the future.

Oh and yes it has allready been stated but the Cyclops can be removed it is done more frequently than you would think.

All the best,
Jason

thats right i am thinking about the valve.

the SD is a little thicker though isnt it??

i havent seena SD in a while, a bud had one with a diving company logo on the face, cant think now what it was, but anyway havent seen him or the SD in a few yrs now.

you must mean COMEX?

The Sub and Seadweller have similar diameter's to the Tag you already own
(40mm). The cyclops lens is one difference, and the Seadweller also stands higher off of the wrist, due to the oyster case back being thicker/more domed. Some people who like the Sub do not like the "tallness" of the Seadwellers case. If you are going to buy online I would recommend trying them at a jewelry store first, if you can.

I love my Sea Dweller and had coveted one for years before pulling the trigger. However, I remember when it used to be a 'big' watch but at only 40mm, it looks quite small compared to my TAG Monaco, IWC Cousteau, Panerais and Bell & Ross. They are all around 44mm.
It's a stone classic but the trend is for big watches right now and that might be a consideration.
I do think one can go too far as I like my 44mm Bell & Ross stealth model but the 46 or 47mm (it's square) with blue numbers and hands no less, was bought on impulse and I'm too self conscious to wear it, perhaps not the best £3000 I've ever spent...

Just a thought....have you look at Omega's SeaMaster line? I have always been partial to the GMT.

I've looked at them but I prefer the look of the sub/sd. That is the main reason I bought my Tag.

You gonna get a job first before getting that SD?

PTSD suffering Gulf War vets generally get over their personal issues, substance abuse, depression, not-leaving-the-house problems before purchasing $5k watches.

It is MUCH easier to buy something than it is to sell it, without taking a financial bath....this is a truism that has served me very, very well over the years.........as in I used to be dirt-poor, had to sell things to pay the rent.........generally speaking, you want an income level to support nice stuff....so you can keep it.

That said, carry on smartly.

(PS...here is a tattoo I did on my neighbor a few weeks ago)

I'm definitly taking your advice in consideration. I am going to try to go back to school next semester using voc rehab or my GI bill. I'm also putting money away in an IRA. There is no way I'll pay full price for one these watches, I'm buying used through a site that has good feedback.

you must mean COMEX?

you know i think thats right, comex, my bud didnt dive at all but he did work off shore oil rigs and bought it from a guy who did dive, i presume anyway, & i presume comex is a diving company related to the oil drilling industry.................

he has had it for a while, since ~'95 or so.

the SD's are big watches but nothing like a pan for sure.

nothing against omegas but i've always preffered subs or SD's (or GMT's too) to anything omega offers, i have an older omega seamaster of my dads and while it runs great just never was one of my favs, if it woulda been it woulda saved me some $$ lol.

other than rolex subs/SD's/GMT's #2 in my book is marathon, i like those & am eventually gonna get one, too bad ya can only wear one watch at a time lol.
