hey folks~

I handled a paramilitary about a week back. I really enjoyed the feel and the lock. It was a done deal, I nearly bought it right there. I then put it in my pocket to get the feel of carrying it around. Ugh, tip down? Seriously? No chance of change? Felt like crying. I put the knife back on the counter and eye-humped about two dozen other knives. Nothing compared. The only other knife that I have on my short list is a 14205 from Benchmade. I do want the Benchmade, but I was really wanting to try out a Spyderco. I tried a few others (Delica and Endura) but, meh, I'll keep looking. I know they're "the" Spyderco's and maybe if the shop had the G10's I'd be more impressed.

Pretty much, if anyone knows of a Spyderco that is similar to the para, I'd like to know. The shop I go to is small, real small. I checked them out online and its a bit on the difficult side to get an idea of what's what (Also, Spyderco needs a site redesign, yikes). So from personal experience, does anyone have another Spyderco in mind that is similar? Man, loved that lock though, but I guess it's really only on the para?

If you want an honest answer, there is no such thing a substitute for the para:p..
The ATR, salsa and yojimbo also have the same lock as the para.
The mili comes in all of the exotic steels also.
Let me say, the Para is my favorite spyderco Design.. and the 14205 is my favorite BM design.

Tip down, Can't be to much of an issue, with a lot of Para owners.
I believe there are literally 1000's of of owners, that the Para is there #1
choice of an edc. Go ahead buy it! You won't be happy till you do.

I do agree that the stock tip down clip is pretty bad.. It carries much better with a tip up clip or with out it.. Removing that clip really makes the knife a bit better for grip and control IMO..
STR, myself or a few other people could put a new tip up clip on it too..
Im doing that with my para, It is worth it.

I am really bonding with my new para D2. I took it fishing tonight and used it as a machete in some vine-riddled woods. Dam that thing is sharp! I also can't imagine wanting a thumb stud anymore as the hole is perfect. The scales are excellent and completely non slip. Pretty much damn near perfect.

I think I might get the tip up mod. Where is the STR section, I can't find it again.

no substitute really. not that i particularly like the knife. just get one. i used to carry all tip downs until i got more into knives and learned there was a difference, and it has never bugged me. its such a miniscule, miniscule factor that far too many people care about. id say the fact that it rides so high is more of a downside than tip down carry. and, just my 2 cents, tip downs are deployed just as quickly, painlessly, and mindlessly as tip ups. you could always get it re drilled and tapped for a nice titanium low rider if youre so picky about it.

I got past the tip down carry on my D2 Para real quick not that it was much of an issue my past 3 knives that I have bought where tip down (D2 Para, Benchmade 913D2 and Kershaw JYD2 CB)

IMHO, the only thing comparable to the Para is the Lil Temperance; same lock, stout and sturdy knife. But it was disco'd some time ago and now commmands a hefty price (around $200.00) in the aftermarket.

A Mini-Manix may be the closest thing I see as currently comparable to the Para. Hope this helps.

I have never seen tip down as a deployment issue as I have my thumb in the hole instantly! The issue for me is I like to keep it in my right front pocket and going in for a quarter can be scratchy when wearing jeans. At work it's no problem because I wear a different style, wide pocket work pant.

You can get a small file and round off the corner.

Or the low rider clip mentioned. STR does a great job.

Another thing I'd like to add is that you can carry it in your right rear pocket, against the seam, and assuming you don't carry your wallet there, it works pretty well.

An Emerson stubby maybe?

+1 on the Emerson CQC14 Snubby....carries about the same as the Para...although slightly heavier. IMO much better ergo's than the Para, stouter blade, Tip-up, and full liners. Plus if your a fan of the "wave" the 14's got it, and if not:

how about a spyderco caly 3 ? its a small flat ground g10 knife, fits very well in the hand, is pretty light.

Sorry folks,

It was just a preference issue. Concerning the clip, I have no issue with deployment or speed. I just *like* tip up. Nothing more, nothing less. Didn't realize the passion behind this issue.

I really enjoyed the knife. I didn't realize that I could have a clip made for it. I think that's the best way.

Also, that Emerson was pretty. I'll have to find one of those then put it on the list. Nice knife.

Oh boy, here it goes.

I hate to agree with him, but with the amount of knife that hangs out of the pocket with the Para, I almost feel it is faster to draw and open with tip up than my 30 tip down knives I usually carry!

True, tip down is not that bad at all.. And it is better IMO to do the spyder drop..
But to make the knife more comfortable in my hand .. tip up is better.. And allows the use of the lanyard hole..

Both are good, but on different knives..

A smaller, lighter, knife in S30V is the Sage. Has less punch than a Para, but is a pretty fine knife.
