I was about to order a featherlite off the AG Russell website and noticed shipping would cost me $20 to canada which is kinda dumb to me if Im gonna buy a $35 knife so does anyone have any suggestions for a substitute? basically im looking for a knife of similar size and dimensions that can be opened one handed has a good lock and that has the best grade of steel flat blade I can expect for the money

something similar to this http://www.agrussell.com/knives/by_...therliteclip_point_blade_with_aus8_steel.html

thanks

Good luck getting just about any folder through Canada Customs!! Unless it is so tight it is almost impossible to open they are going to confiscate it!!

Not true at all my friend- at least greatly exaggerated. To make it across customs it must not be able to be flicked open. Ask the seller to tighten the pivot pins and you will be fine- I just got over 20 knives from New Graham in 2 packages, both opened, and nothing was confiscated. I would take a look at New Graham for American dealers- they have always charged me exact shipping costs.
The Byrd line of knives is good, as is Dozier Ka-Bar knives. I would suggest the Spydreco Native or Delica/Endura for great materials at a good price (and they can be found all over Canada). Try posting this in the Canadian Connection for better luck in your area.

The Spyderco Endura/Delica are similar in thickness and usefulness. The Dozier Ka-Bar is probably more similar to the Featherlite though.

actually it shouldnt be an issue many of these knives are sold in canadian knife shops. I got a vaquero grande that was openly displayed in one shop near me

I was actually looking closely at the native how would you say the native, delica and ka-bar compare to each other? any strengths or weaknesses

The Native is a bit bulkier than the others.

I don't feel that any of the knives mentioned are the same quality as the AG Russell, but the Ka-Bar is much less expensive, so you aren't getting ripped off even if the fit and finish isn't quite as good.

If you don't mind something a bit bulky, and a step up in price, the Benchmade Griptillian and Mini-Griptillian are very nice knives too.

Definately try to handle each if you can. I love the G-10 special edition Native but HATE the Native III handle. I only have the Endura ZDP model (recently acquired) and so far fit and finish is very good. The Ka-bar is very solid lockup on my model, but is definately a cheaper knife- the handle is well checkered and the hollow grind is very acute- a great slicer but I wouldn't try to chop down trees with any of these!!!

well im gonna e-mail the ag russell site and see if i can get the shipping cost cut Ive done that with other sites in the past

At 1.5 ounces the featherlight is hard to match. It does not look scary, so I can use it just about anywhere. It has a good size blade for such a small knife.

It would be cool to have one with G10 and a clip, or maybe SV30, or laminated ZDP-189. But the Featherlite with a General Purpose blade is just about perfect as it is.

You cannot beat The A G Featherlite for a lightweight, sharp and strong knife. I carry one irregardless of what I have clipped to my jeans or sweats. Hey, I retired no more slacks and ties for me. I prefer his general purpose blade. I also own most of the knives mentioned so for as well as some Chris Reeve knives and Kershaws but the featherlite carried in the pocket is light and unobtrusive and you do not even know it is there.

is there somewhere I can make that request? I dont see anywhere on the order page that gives me the option for first class to canada

yeah I sent out an e-mail yesterday
I did notice who suggested it thats pretty cool actually what are the odds that I can post a question about a knife somewhere in the nearly infinite cyberspace and the maker of it responds

There is a space on the order page called "Comments" for doing that, or anything else you want or need to say.

I've had a featherlite for a few years now. Probably one of my favorites. I've got the clip blade, and it is so light, thin, but with a nice sized blade. Carries well in shorts or pants. Definately worth getting. Which blade shape do you guys like? thanks

I think that anyone who owns one will tell you that THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR THE FEATHERLITE. We sell lots of knives that cost more, none that offer greater value.

yeah I was also curious about this Im leaning towards the general purpose blade to me it kinda looks halfway between a clip and drop point
