Hey guys, anyone here have a Subvert with up and down play? I just got this in today secondhand from a reputable guy and the knife is like new besides being taken apart and cleaned.

Anyway there is very obvious up and down play when the lock is engaged. I say obvious as in you can't see it move, but you can feel it by moving the blade and it doesn't take much effort at all to feel it move. I took some pictures of the lockup and it's not the best to capture on camera but in person you can see it better.

It's like the very corner of the lockbar surface is BARELY touching the blade tang. Like you can almost see right between the tang and lockbar face. It's almost a gap there. Has anyone had this? This is my 2nd Subvert I've ever owned and the first one was solid as a rock.

Follow up question, do you think if this is a flaw in the build that I could send it back to Spyderco to be fixed? Or am I stuck since I'm not the original owner. It also didn't come with the box (which I didn't know was happening till I got it. I thought he was sending the box as well but never mentioned not having it). Anyway thanks for any help guys. Don't really wanna be rid of this knife again but if its flawed then it's flawed I guess.

I have no experience w/a Subvert but I've heard tell that Spyderco will not/cannot fix limited release designer knives, like the Subvert, especially since it was made in Taiwan, because it does not keep any parts on hand for such knives.

I've also heard tell that the designers themselves will not fix knives designed by them but made by Spyderco because they do not consider such knives as made by them but by Spyderco which should provide the necessary warranty/repair support.

So, it's a classic "Catch 22" situation.

You can always ask if Spyderco will consider trying to fix your Subvert but don't be surprised if they don't/can't. In which case, you'd have to find a knife maker who has the interest/skills to fix the knife but that option would probably be cost prohibitive.

So, I'd say your best recourse is to try to return it to the seller for a refund.

Good luck with that.

This, and similar issues that arise with folders, is why I find myself buying mostly fixed blades these days. Moving parts are bound to eventually wear and develop issues.

Ok then send it in to Spyderco. Doesn't matter that you're not the original owner and don't have the box. They warranty the knife. Unless it's a counterfeit which I doubt because the only copies I've seen have been obvious cheap builds.

Since the knife has bee taken apart and reassembled, there might be a fee to reassemble it. People that sell a knife that is supposed to be "new in the box" that they have taken apart and reassembled it, are not new in the box. New means that it was assembled at the factory by experts.

I changed that part in another post I made, meant to change it here as well. I just meant that the condition was unused, but had been disassembled prior to me taking possession of it is all.

But as for the disassembly, I've done it myself twice now and put it back together exactly how it's supposed to go. I'm not exactly a newbie when it comes to knife maintenance and it was like this before I took it apart myself anyway. After reaching out to the guy he also said he disassembled it to clean it, but no other changes were made to the knife itself.

Is this something that can be addressed at the factory with you guys Sal? Thanks for the response by the way, it's a pleasure and honor to be conversing with you.

Hi Ryan,

You can explain it to the Customer service and they'll let you know what can be done. Probably speak to Charlynne. They can certainly tell if it's been taken apart and assembled correctly. If it' a warrantee issue, they'll take care of you. We do get many knives that have been assembled incorrectly, even though the customer thought they'd done it right. We even get some sent to us in a bag with missing parts wanting us to reassemble it and replace parts for no fee? I'll give Charlynne a heads-up.

I appreciate the help a lot. I totally understand that, and I can imagine the stories of items you've received back from customers haha. I'm going to give them a shout and ask about it, thanks so much again and I look forward to seeing what they can help with. Appreciate you Sal.
