(I originally posted this on British Blades and since there were a number of positive reactions about my approach I crosspost it here as well - hope you find it interesting):

Hi all,

Indeed it's not evident to share our peculiar interest with most people at large.
Yesterday however I had quite a bit of success: a meal for friends, 8 people in total, and every person found next to his/her plate a different stylish French or Italian pocket knife for the meal.
They were all a bit surprised when unfolding them, then they were amused and soon they all (men and women alike) appreciated them.
It is of course true that the French (and sometimes Italian) type of pocket knives are much more socially acceptable than black serrated recurve tanto horrors.
An illustration of the knives I made available for the meal:

From top to bottom:
- Maserin Gourmet (only one from Italy, the rest is from France. A lovely chic knife that looks even better in ebony than in this olive wood), AUS8 blade
- Perceval L10 with pistachio wood handle, 19C27 blade
- Chambriard Le Compagnon, a Le Thiers design with juniper wood handle, 12C27 blade
- Henri Sannajust Le Thiers with micarta handle (a lesser known manufacturer), 12C27 blade
- Fontenille-Pataud backlocking laguiole with amourette handle, 12C27 blade
- Laforet L'Arconsat with horn tip handle, 12C27 blade
- Opinel 8 with limited horn tip handle, probably 12C27 blade
- Nontron (I think it's size #25) with boxwood handle, 12C27 blade

Fine knives. I will disagree on the Maserin: nothing looks better than olive, except perhaps the blonde horn on the Opinel . :)

When I saw the pictures, I guessed wrong that the Laforet L'Arconsat would be Italian.

I do love olive wood, my first Gourmet was the olive wood one. Meanwhile I Have the ebony as well; HERE is a picture of it, I think that in real life it has even more class! Of course, a matter of taste.
Indeed l'Arconsat looks somewhat classically Italian. Like a Consigli or a Saladini knife.

Anyway the cool thing was that my friends became quite approving about my absurd little addiction.

Of course I didn't show my Military, my ZT200 or my Pohl force Alpha One! :)

you just keep showing off that perceval:D:D...I really really want one! Can you give me a link to one just like that if possible?

Very cool idea placing them at the table like that!

Here is Perceval's page on the L10; you can browse the variants.

I could do this because most French knives are designed to be also acceptable at the table.
I would soooo love Spyderco to produce a kind of FR PK, with this concept in mind !

I really enjoy the designs by Italian and French companies. It's too bad they're not all widely available in USA for comparable prices :( (at least from what I've been able to find)

Definately French. I met Mr. Laforet on several occasions, and he's a really nice guy and talented knifemaker.

I own 6 "L'Arconsats, with different wood handles. Beautiful little knives, and very affordable.

There's a lot of interesting knives in France, almost every region has it's traditional pocket knife.

@dagon: interesting post, nice knives.

Kind regards,

Jos

:thumbup:Cool thread Dagon

I like those Laforet L'Arconsat's,very elegant!

I did gave my dad a SAK for his birthday... in hope that he would see the value of caring a knife. But every time i see it still lays on the desk... to bad it did not work out the way i had hoped.
