There is a facebook group thread going about re-creating a Texas state knife group now that the former group has fizzled out. What states have successful knife clubs or organizations that could serve as a model?

Another related question, what should a state organization provide in terms of services?

Thanks,
Jason

The boys (and girls) in Georgia have a pretty successful group. They meet 3-4 times a year at different locations. Most members are pretty active (myself excluded), and they always have demos and great food.

Here is a link to their website: http://www.georgiaknifemakersguild.com/

You can get contact info on the site. I would recommend contacting Harry and Charlie Matthews, Andy Roy, Carl Rechsteiner. They can give you an insight as to what makes a group work.

Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas all have great organizations to promote knifemaking.
Oklahoma has two shop tours(spring and fall) for demos and viewing others shops. We also feature one of the best meals for the demos bar none. Knife show first weekend in March.
Kansas has followed Arkansas and Oklahoma with shop tours. They also feature a central location for ABS activities to boot.

The AKCA Arizona Knife Collectors Association has been around a number of years and continues to thrive.

They do Raffles at the monthly meetings and have different makers do In-Shop classes at a very reasonable price
Tim Hancock, Mike Mooney, Travis Wortz, Jim Ort, Todd Kopp, Ken Mcfall and other known makers have all been there at one time or another.
There is also the Copper State knife collectors association active here in Phoenix

Very good, thanks. Any more suggestions as to what a knife org should offer in terms of services? Any more successful clubs out there?

The North Carolina Custom Knife Makers Guild has worked well for a long time and going strong. We sponsor knife making classes and own a some of the equipment at a community college, for exchanging we use the school for our meetings ( 4 a year ) .It is centrally located in the state so works good for people to make the meetings. The meeting are usually 3 demos, Iron in the hat and meet n greet. being convenient for people to get together is high on the list for making it work IMO.
