Succumbing to the King - another Becker I really didn't NEED joining the family

A new arrival this week. Did a little QC testing upon arrival. The tip did not have an even grind but not worried for a big knife like this as long as no strength issues. So I stabbed tip into hickory tree chopping block several times, even drove a little deeper some by pounding the pommel a few times with wooden baton. No issues with tip of blade. Next just a quick batoning of a 4" inch or so split log to test this out. Pics are below. It was nice, straight grain piece of wood so no issues expected and none encountered.

I was a little surprised that this removed a little of the blade coating - especially what I have heard about new coating - but not concerned. My other BKs with new coating (5, 16, 10) were either stripped before using or have not been used for wood processing so no other experience. I'll let the coating hang in there as long as it will on this one and strip at some time when most of the coating is gone.

I said I was not going to do this (get a BK9). After all I have a Condor Hudson Bay. Why do I need a 9? But when a certain mail order, large online sporting goods-only retailer drop its price to match that of the river store, had free shipping, AND I had enough credit card loyalty points to get it for FREE:rolleyes: how could I resist?

The family so far (sorry no family portrait at this time): 2 BK2s, BK5, BK9, BK10, 2 BK11s, 2 BK14s, BK16, BK24

Hey D2......

Glad you are enjoying your new Nine......... Nice pics...... I freaking love batonning a pice of straight grain seasoned wood like that one....... I can almost feel the cleave from your pics.....

BTW......A slightly uneven final bevel is normal as this is done freehand by skilled humans..... I can not conceive of this causing any strength issues.........

Thanks for your continuing business....... I really do appreciate it....

All Best.....

Ethan

Ethan, thank you for some great knives. I have never made it to a Becker gathering up in the hills of TN, but I have some friends living up on a "mountain" outside Townsend - looks to be real close to you. I will try to look you up sometime when I visit.

I guarantee you'll quickly find something you NEED it for. I always do when I buy a new knife....
