I DID IT. Today I went out with the intention of making fire with my firesteel with natural firestarters. First off i battoned some wood with my SRK and Northstar. The i made a log cabin fire with pine needles, two pine cones, and grasses ont the bottom. The i added more grasses to the fire place and the went to work getting the starters. I used ceder bark and dired grasses from around my mom's wild flower garden. It took me a little work, but i saw the sparks catching the bark and kept at it. I then saw the coal grow into flam and added the birds nests that i made. From there to my pre-made fire and there I had fire. To say the least I was very excited and releved that I had done it. Ill try and post pictures latter. And for those who are dissillusioned, probly not to many out there, but keep working at it and you'll get it.

Way to go. Did you scrape the inside of the cedar's bark to get it to more easily catch the spark? Sounds like you did a great job either way.

Congrats!:D It's quite a thrill, isn't it?!

Yep tonight i made up my drill set with a willow limb, i hear its a good starting wood, ill be working on it some time this week to get a fire.

I went in the woods yesterday to practice my fire bow, I got the coal no problem because the wood was very dry, I used a cedar fireboard that I carved from a dead cedar tree, the spindle was made from ash and the hand socket I made from ironwood ,the bow was made from ash. A good combinations that seems to work well. I also put a sheet of birch bark on the ground to keep dampness from getting to the fireboard.

Way to go Ghost. Were you using flint and steel or a commercial fire starter? Either way I'm glad you did it.

Just ask next time, I'll let you borrow my zippo.

Every survival kit needs one, along with a can of lighter fluid and some flints. About $11.00 at wally world.

I used a sweedish firesteel army model. Got them to go along with my BRKT NorthStar. Works quite well.

Yep they are great. For an easy to carry tinder you can try frayed jute twine or of course a cotton ball.

Yeah, thats true....
But you have to admit there's something about starting a fire using friction or flint and steel. When you can do things like that, it's not just survival anymore, its Primitve Living. Something that reaching down into the soul and you find that part of you that modern world cares nothing about. Or mabe you become a modern savage. Living wild, beyond the control of people. Unrestrained. Free.
